Brent Lundell was the Program Manager in the development of our latest, most innovative product to date, Cloud Sites, and provides us a deeper look into the making of our most revolutionary platform yet.
Cloud Sites was born to be a leader in the revolution of cloud technology, but it was also born out of necessity.
Our Shared hosting does it’s job, and does it’s job well, but we started recognizing we had a gap to fill. What about our customers who want a little more control, a little more power, but the same simplicity as Shared hosting? That’s where Cloud Sites comes in.

Why cloud hosting?

A year and a half in the making, we’ve developed Cloud Sites to be our most revolutionary cloud hosting platform yet, all while still being surprisingly simple to use. We designed it from the ground up, piece by piece, so it’s perfectly crafted to allow even the lowliest of non-tech-savvy customers to fully harness the benefits of the cloud.
Interior3.1
“Cloud” can be an obscure word in the web technology industry. In the simplest of terms, our version of the cloud refers to a network of resources (such as storage space, CPU power, and RAM access) that work together to store and run data. Instead of a customer’s information being served from a single server, their data is sourced across multiple servers.
This way of storing customer data opens the floodgates of benefits.
It gives us speed. Since the load of running a website is shared across multiple drives, sites simply load faster. It also gives us resilience. With data stored in multiple servers, customers are safeguarded against losing everything, even temporarily. Hypothetically, we could lose half the hard drives and we’d be perfectly fine. We’d just replace the damaged hard drives and the previous data would be written back to them.
A customer-favorite feature has been the simplicity of the new dashboard. It’s extremely easy to interpret components such as site load time, server uptime, and visitor analytics. Customers enjoy being empowered with meaningful data in a simplified form.

How did Cloud Sites come about?

Cloud Sites is the first hosting product we’ve ever launched using the expertise from all sister offices. Endurance, our parent company, has locations in Utah, Texas, Massachusetts and India – so it was literally a worldwide effort.
Interior3.1
Tens of thousands of hours from hundreds of brilliant minds were devoted to creating, testing, tweaking, configuring, and (sometimes) tossing out our work so we could start all over and make it even better. The result? A product we’re confident in and proud to finally share with our customers.

Who was involved?

Our team was a combination of forces and talents, including OpenStack engineers – who are the best of the best when it comes to the development of cloud computing. Storage engineers, software developers, kernel developers, system architects and a myriad of other forces also played their part. That core team worked closely with partners and other experts around the world.
Long story short, we’re proud of what we’ve developed. Cloud Sites is safer, faster, simpler, and bigger. Read more about the benefits of cloud hosting.
