WordPress gives you the power to create content that is engaging and powerful for your site. Within the content editor, users have the ability to develop content that is rich and visually engaging for their audiences using blocks. The blocks can transform any page or post into dynamic content whether a user wants to customize, embed, or change the style of their layout.

What are Blocks in WordPress?

Blocks make it easier for users to create content for their WordPress site regardless of their skill level. Users have the option to use the default blocks to build their site or advanced users can get creative by developing custom blocks for any of their unique needs.

Current default blocks with the editor include:

  • Button
  • Categories
  • Code
  • Columns
  • Cover image
  • Embeds
  • File
  • Gallery
  • Heading
  • Image
  • Latest posts
  • List
  • Paragraph
  • Pullquote

Creating a Post

To create your first post:

1.) Click on “Add New,” under “Posts,” in the WordPress dashboard.

Once the new post appears, click the + to select the desired block type from the “Add Block,” menu to begin creating content specific to the block type.

Adding Blocks in the Editor

There are currently multiple ways to insert blocks throughout posts and pages. This is essential for content that requires a combination of sources like media or images.

1.) At the top left of the page, you’ll notice a toolbar with a + icon. If you click this icon, it will allow you to search for blocks and insert them.

2.) In the editor field, you will see a block inserter option, also with a + icon when you click above, in between, or below blocks that you already have in the editor.

Pro tip: A shorthand trick for adding a new block is to type “/ +” and the block name that you want to insert. This is known as the slash inserter and is great for people who only like using the keyboard.

How to Edit or Delete Blocks

1.) On the top left of the page, next to the block inserter, you have the ability to undo and redo actions on your page or post.

2.) Next to the icons is the option to click info (i). This will show you valuable information about your page—including word count and a post outline.

The Block Outline

The block outline is a helpful option for navigating documents with many blocks so you don’t have to scroll endlessly. Users with clients will find block management easier because lots of code runs as blocks and can provide a better experience by scrolling in-and-out of the viewport.

2.) You will see an icon made up of three lines that look like a bulleted list. Click on that icon to see the blocks that make up your post or page. By clicking on a given block, you’ll be led to that block within the editor field.

There are no limits to the number of blocks you can use in any post or page you create for your WordPress website.
