Owners are now deciding how much control to give the software that made their first impression on consumers, and whether to tell them that a machine designed their storefront at all.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-key-takeaways\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">Key takeaways<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>More than half of small business owners (53%) have built their website with AI.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Among small business owners who built with AI, 85% say they would not have built their site the same way without it.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Small business owners who built with AI saved an average of $850 and about 32 hours compared with hiring a developer.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>72% of small business owners who built with AI are highly satisfied with the website AI built for them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>After launch, more than 9 in 10 small business owners who built with AI (94%) keep using AI to run or grow the business.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Since running on AI, more than a third (34%) report more website traffic and around a third (31%) more sales or revenue.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-how-ai-lowered-the-bar-to-getting-a-business-online\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How AI lowered the bar to getting a business online<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">For years, small business owners gave the same reasons for not launching a site: not enough time and not enough technical skill. Before those tools existed, the most common reason owners gave for not launching sooner was not having enough time (34%), followed by not having the technical skills (28%). Setting up the domain or hosting was among the tasks owners were least likely to outsource to AI (21%), which suggests many were willing to handle the setup once the build itself became easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The people who used AI were glad they did. More than 4 in 5 (85%) said they would not have built their site the same way without it, and they saved an average of $850 and about 32 hours compared with hiring a developer or agency. Interest was not limited to owners who had already tried it. Among those who had not used AI for their site, 71% said they would consider it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-how-ai-built-websites-stack-up-against-agencies\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How AI-built websites stack up against agencies<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Speed and savings only matter if the result holds up, so we asked owners how their AI-built sites compared with professional work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image alignfull size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"711\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.bluehost.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/the-trust-test-1-711x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-280173\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.bluehost.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/the-trust-test-1-711x1024.png 711w, https:\/\/www.bluehost.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/the-trust-test-1-208x300.png 208w, https:\/\/www.bluehost.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/the-trust-test-1-117x169.png 117w, https:\/\/www.bluehost.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/the-trust-test-1-188x270.png 188w, https:\/\/www.bluehost.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/the-trust-test-1-417x600.png 417w, https:\/\/www.bluehost.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/09\/the-trust-test-1-438x630.png 438w\" sizes=\"auto, 100vw\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among owners who built with AI, 72% were very or extremely satisfied with the result, and nearly all (97%) were at least somewhat satisfied with what the tool produced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Few owners treated the AI output as finished. Only 9% kept the first draft exactly as the tool produced it; the rest made changes before launch, most often editing the copy (61%) and adjusting the design (60%). Some saw its usefulness in the numbers. More than a third (34%) said their site drew more traffic after they started running it on AI, and around a third (31%) said the business brought in more sales or revenue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Owners were more cautious about fully handing over the keys to AI. More than half (54%) wanted to approve every change AI makes to their site, while 30% would let it run on its own. Most owners were happy to let AI do the work, as long as they still got the final say.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-the-trust-gap-behind-the-ai-website-boom\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">The trust gap behind the AI website boom<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">AI has taken a lot of the cost and difficulty out of getting a small business online, and owners have noticed. The ones who used it saved time and money and stuck with it after launch. What they have not done is hand over full control, and half still hesitate to tell customers that a machine built their site. If you are weighing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluehost.com\/ai-website-builder\">an AI build<\/a> , the owners here point to a sensible middle path: let the tool do the heavy lifting, then review the work before it goes live.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"h-methodology\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Methodology<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This Bluehost survey was conducted online in August 2026 by Fractl on behalf of Bluehost. It questioned 201 small business owners in the United States who own or co-own a business and help decide about its website. All participants were adults aged 18 or older. The average age was 44; by gender, 54% were women and 42% were men. By generation, 11% were Gen Z, 49% were millennials, 31% were Gen X and 8% were baby boomers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Most findings describe the 107 owners (53%) who used an AI tool to build their site, referred to as owners who built with AI. The survey routed the other 94 past those questions. Experience figures are based on these 107 (margin of error about plus or minus 9.5 percentage points), while adoption, intent and demographic figures use all 201 (about plus or minus 6.9 points) at a 95% confidence level. Generations are defined as Gen Z (18 to 29), millennials (30 to 45), Gen X (46 to 61) and baby boomers (62 and older). Subgroups under 25 respondents or 5% of their base are not reported.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Money and time savings are self-reported averages with statistical outliers removed, and reflect the use of AI in general rather than any specific product.
