You also need somewhere to run the code that receives inputs, connects the different parts of the workflow and acts on those decisions. With a Jev-based pipeline, Jev handles the decision-making through its hosted API, while your VPS runs the pipeline and the supporting application code.

In this guide, we’ll walk through how to set up that pipeline on a VPS, including server requirements, security, deployment and scaling.

What is a Jev-based agent pipeline and how does it work?

Jev is decision making model from TypeSafe that returns structured answers to defined questions, along with probabilities your application can use to determine what happens next. nlike a traditional LLM, Jev does not generate text, prose or code. It helps your application make decisions based on the context you provide.

An agent pipeline is the workflow you build and run around Jev. It takes in context such as a ticket, event or record, sends it to Jev for a decision, then acts on the structured response. If the next step requires generated text, your code can call a separate LLM.

The split is the important part: your VPS runs the orchestration code, while Jev runs remotely on TypeSafe’s hosted infrastructure.

Jev supports three question types, and you can mix them in a single call:

Noul questions ask a yes/no question and return the probability that the answer is yes, from 0 to 1.

Choice questions select one option from a set you define, up to 255 options. The answer includes a probability for every option and a confidence value.

Score questions rate the state on an ordered rubric you define, up to 10 levels. The answer includes a score, a probability for each level and a confidence value.

Jev evaluates every question in a request in parallel and independently, so adding questions barely changes response time.

You may see Jev described as a model that “can’t hallucinate.” That refers to its output format, not the accuracy of its decisions. Jev always returns an answer that fits the schema you asked for, but it can still pick the wrong allowed option. Treat probability and confidence as signals for decision-making, not guarantees.

If you’re new to this pattern, our self-hosted AI agent guide explains how an agent framework differs from a hosted decision model like Jev. You run the framework yourself, while Jev remains a service your application calls through its API.

Why run your Jev pipeline on a VPS?

A Jev pipeline is a long-lived service that needs to be reachable, secure and predictable to operate. You can prototype on a laptop, but production webhooks and schedules need a machine that stays online. A VPS gives you a dedicated Linux server with root access, so you control the runtime, the network rules and where your secrets live.

Here are the practical reasons a VPS fits this workload better than a laptop or serverless functions.

Always-on execution: Webhooks and scheduled jobs need a host that stays reachable, which a laptop cannot guarantee.

Full root and SSH: You run any Python or Node stack and install the exact dependencies your pipeline needs.

Secrets stay put: Your Jev API key and logs live on infrastructure you control rather than on ephemeral function instances.

Predictable cost: Flat monthly pricing avoids per-invocation billing that climbs with traffic.

No cold starts: A persistent process answers immediately instead of waiting for a function to spin up.

Our walkthrough on how to run agents on Bluehost VPS shows how a VPS keeps an agent workload online continuously with dedicated resources. Our comparison of self-managed vs managed hosting can help you decide how much of the stack to operate yourself. It also shows where your team’s time is better spent.

Choosing the right VPS for a Jev pipeline

Because Jev does inference remotely, sizing is simpler than for a model you run yourself. The pipeline mostly waits on network calls and does light CPU work, so you do not need a GPU. You scale up only for heavier needs, such as high concurrency, local queues or vector memory and co-hosting other agents on the same server.

The table below maps Bluehost Self-Managed VPS tiers to pipeline workloads so you can match resources to concurrency. We chose vCPU, memory, storage and price because those are the specs that separate the tiers for an I/O-bound service.

Bluehost VPS plans mapped to Jev pipeline workloads

Plan

vCPU / RAM / Storage

Best-fit pipeline workload

Price

NVMe 2

1 vCPU / 2GB DDR5 / 50GB NVMe

A dev sandbox or a low-volume pipeline with occasional calls

$4.69/mo

NVMe 4

2 vCPU / 4GB DDR5 / 100GB NVMe

Docker and steady production traffic; a sensible default for many small-to-midsize pipelines

$9.49/mo

NVMe 8

4 vCPU / 8GB DDR5 / 200GB NVMe

Multi-container production, higher concurrency and local queues

$12.99/mo

NVMe 16

8 vCPU / 16GB DDR5 / 450GB NVMe

Several co-hosted agents, local vector memory or large databases

$25.99/mo

Note: Pricing is as of September 2026. Move up a tier when you add concurrency, persistent local state or more agents on the same host.

All Self-Managed VPS tiers include dedicated vCPU, DDR5 memory, NVMe storage and full root SSH access. We manage the hardware, network and virtualization; you manage the OS, configuration and apps.

You can choose AlmaLinux, CentOS Stream, Debian, Fedora, Rocky Linux or Ubuntu. The commands in this guide are written for Ubuntu 24.04 LTS, and Debian 12 works the same way. If your team standardizes on AlmaLinux, Rocky Linux or another Red Hat–based distribution, the overall steps are the same, but package names, firewall commands and file locations differ.

How to self-host a Jev-based agent pipeline on a VPS?

The following steps take you from a fresh server to a persistent, TLS-secured pipeline that calls Jev. We’ll build a small Python web service that receives support tickets on a webhook, asks Jev three questions about each one and routes it.

Step 1: Provision and secure the VPS

Choose a plan and Ubuntu 24.04, then connect over SSH. Create a dedicated, non-root service user that will run the pipeline, so the process holds only the privileges it needs.

# Create a least-privilege service account for the pipeline

sudo adduser --system --group --home /opt/jev-pipeline jevsvc

# Firewall: deny inbound by default, allow SSH plus HTTP/HTTPS for the webhook

sudo ufw default deny incoming

sudo ufw default allow outgoing

sudo ufw allow OpenSSH

sudo ufw allow 80/tcp

sudo ufw allow 443/tcp

sudo ufw --force enable

# Keep the OS patched

sudo apt update && sudo apt upgrade -y

Before closing your current SSH session, open a second one to confirm you can still connect. Switch SSH to key-based login and disable password authentication and keep the OS patched on a schedule.

Step 2: Install your runtime and pipeline dependencies

Install Python and create an isolated virtual environment for the pipeline. TypeSafe publishes official SDKs for Python (typesafe-sdk, Python 3.10 or later) and JavaScript/TypeScript (@typesafe-ai/sdk). This guide uses Python, which ships as version 3.12 on Ubuntu 24.04.

sudo apt install -y python3 python3-venv
sudo -u jevsvc python3 -m venv /opt/jev-pipeline/venv
sudo -u jevsvc /opt/jev-pipeline/venv/bin/pip install <official-jev-sdk> httpx

Jev’s request and response format isn’t the OpenAI chat-completions format, so you can’t simply point existing OpenAI client code at TypeSafe’s API. Use the official SDK, or a gateway that supports Jev natively. The SDK also retries rate-limit and overload errors with backoff by default.
If you’re assembling a larger workflow around the decision step, our guide to building an agent with n8n shows one way to wire triggers, logic and integrations together.

Step 3: Store your Jev API key as a secret

Never commit your API key to source control or put it in your code. Store it in an environment file that only root can read, and let systemd inject it into the service at runtime. Because Jev runs remotely, this key is the most sensitive item on the server.

The TypeSafe SDK automatically reads the key from a variable named TYPESAFE_API_KEY, so use that exact name.

# Create an empty, root-only secrets file, then edit it

sudo install -m 600 -o root -g root /dev/null /etc/jev-pipeline.env sudoedit /etc/jev-pipeline.env

add these lines to file

# Pin a model version so answers don't shift when TypeSafe releases a new model TYPESAFE_DEFAULT_MODEL=jev-1.13.0

# Shared secret that callers must send to your webhook

WEBHOOK_TOKEN=a-long-random-string

Editing the file directly keeps the key out of your shell history. You can generate a random webhook token with openssl rand -hex 32.

Pinning a model version matters because the jev-latest alias moves to each new release, which can change answers without any change on your side. Pin the version you tuned your thresholds against, and upgrade on your own schedule.

Rotate the API key on a schedule and whenever someone with access leaves your team.

Step 4: Write the decision step

The core of the pipeline is small. It builds the state, sends typed questions in one call, reads the answers, and branches in ordinary code. Save this as /opt/jev-pipeline/app.py:

import hmac

import logging

import os

from fastapi import FastAPI, Header, HTTPException

from typesafe_sdk import Choice, Noul, Score, TypeSafeClient

logging.basicConfig(level=logging.INFO)

log = logging.getLogger("jev-pipeline")

app = FastAPI()

client = TypeSafeClient() # reads TYPESAFE_API_KEY from the environment WEBHOOK_TOKEN = os.environ["WEBHOOK_TOKEN"]

QUESTIONS = {

"queue": Choice(

instructions="Which team should handle this ticket?",

criteria={

"billing": "Payments, invoices, refunds or subscriptions",

"technical": "Bugs, outages or integration problems",

"sales": "Pricing, upgrades or new accounts",

},

),

"severity": Score(

instructions="How severe is the customer's problem?",

criteria=[

"Minor question",

"Degraded but usable service",

"Blocking issue",

"Outage or lost revenue",

],

),

"is_urgent": Noul(

instructions="The message conveys urgency or time-sensitivity",

),

}

CONFIDENCE_THRESHOLD = 0.75  # for Choice and Score answers

UNCERTAIN_NOUL = (0.2, 0.8)   # Noul probabilities in this band go to a person

@app.get("/healthz")

def healthz():

return {"status": "ok"}

@app.post("/webhook")

def webhook (ticket: dict, x_webhook_token: str = Header(default="")):

if not hmac.compare_digest(x_webhook_token, WEBHOOK_TOKEN):

raise HTTPException(status_code=401, detail="invalid token")

try:

response = client.system_one(state=ticket, questions=QUESTIONS)

except Exception as exc:

# Jev unavailable or request rejected: never drop the ticket

log.error("Jev call failed: %s", exc)

return {"route": "human_review", "reason": "jev_unavailable"}

queue = response.answers["queue"]

severity = response.answers["severity"]

urgent = response.answers["is_urgent"].noul

needs_review = (

queue.confidence < CONFIDENCE_THRESHOLD

or severity.confidence < CONFIDENCE_THRESHOLD

or UNCERTAIN_NOUL[0] < urgent < UNCERTAIN_NOUL[1]

)

decision = {

"route": "human_review" if needs_review else queue.choice,

"queue": queue.choice,

"severity": severity.score,

"urgent": urgent >= UNCERTAIN_NOUL[1],

"model": response.model, # log which model version answered

}

log.info("Ticket decision: %s", decision)

return decision

Jev returns the decision and a confidence value, but your code owns what happens next. Create /etc/systemd/system/jev-pipeline.service:

[Unit]

Description=Jev agent pipeline

After=network-online.target

Wants=network-online.target

[Service]

User=jevsvc

Group=jevsvc

WorkingDirectory=/opt/jev-pipeline

EnvironmentFile=/etc/jev-pipeline.env

ExecStart=/opt/jev-pipeline/venv/bin/uvicorn app:app --host 127.0.0.1 --port 8000 --workers 2

Restart=on-failure

RestartSec=5

[Install]

WantedBy=multi-user.target

The service listens only on 127.0.0.1, so it isn’t reachable from the internet directly. In the next step, Nginx will sit in front of it and handle HTTPS.

Copy app.py into place with the right ownership, then start the service:

sudo install -o jevsvc -g jevsvc -m 644 app.py /opt/jev-pipeline/app.py

sudo systemctl daemon-reload

sudo systemctl enable --now jev-pipeline

systemctl status jev-pipeline

journalctl -u jev-pipeline –f

Run daemon-reload every time you edit the unit file so systemd picks up the changes. See the systemd.service manual for all available options.

Step 6: Put the webhook behind HTTPS

Your pipeline needs outbound HTTPS to reach the TypeSafe API, which the firewall from Step 1 already allows. For inbound traffic, put Nginx in front of the service and get a free TLS certificate from Let’s Encrypt.

First, point your domain’s DNS A record at the VPS’s IP address. Then install Nginx and Certbot:

sudo apt install -y nginx certbot python3-certbot-nginx

Create /etc/nginx/sites-available/jev-pipeline, replacing example.com with your domain:

server {

    listen 80;

    server_name example.com;

    location /webhook {

        proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8000/webhook;

        proxy_set_header Host $host;

        proxy_set_header X-Real-IP $remote_addr;

        proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-For $proxy_add_x_forwarded_for;

        proxy_set_header X-Forwarded-Proto $scheme;

    }

    location /healthz {

        proxy_pass http://127.0.0.1:8000/healthz;

    }

}

Enable the site, test the config, and request a certificate:

sudo ln -s /etc/nginx/sites-available/jev-pipeline /etc/nginx/sites-enabled/

sudo nginx -t && sudo systemctl reload nginx

sudo certbot --nginx -d example.com

Certbot adds the HTTPS settings and an HTTP-to-HTTPS redirect for you, and sets up automatic renewal. Confirm renewal works with sudo certbot renew –dry-run.

Test the whole path from your own machine:

curl https://[example].com/healthz

curl -X POST https://[example].com/webhook \\

  -H "Content-Type: application/json" \\

  -H "X-Webhook-Token: your-webhook-token" \\

  -d '{"subject": "Payouts failing", "body": "My payouts have failed for 3 days. Please help ASAP."}'

For higher-traffic setups, an API gateway can add rate limiting and stronger authentication such as JWT or OAuth without changing your pipeline code. Bluehost VPS plans also include network-level DDoS protection, which helps keep the service reachable under load.

Also read: AI Gateway vs API Gateway: Which Does Your AI App Need?

Going to production with Docker (optional)

The systemd setup above is the simplest path. Most of it is standard service hygiene, with two additions specific to a hosted decision model: confidence-based routing and per-token cost tracking.

Scale with workers: Run multiple worker processes for concurrency and start with roughly one worker per two vCPUs, then adjust.

Monitor and rotate logs: Add health checks and log rotation so
journalctl
and disk usage stay manageable over time.

Set a confidence threshold: Route low-confidence decisions to human review, keeping AI assistive and a person accountable for edge cases.

Guard against OOM: Cap worker memory and watch for out-of-memory restarts, especially when you co-host other services.

Track usage cost: Estimate spend as flat VPS price plus Jev usage at $0.042 per million input tokens, output free (vendor-stated, September 2026).

Because output tokens are free and input pricing is flat per token, your Jev cost scales with how much state you send. It does not scale with how many answers you request. Batching related questions into one call, as Jev supports, keeps input volume and cost lower.

A practical example: Automating support-ticket triage

The code in Step 4 shows this pattern end to end. A new ticket arrives at your webhook, and the pipeline sends the ticket to Jev with three questions in a single call:

A choice question picks the destination queue.

A score question rates severity on a four-level rubric.

A noul question estimates the probability that the ticket is urgent.

High-confidence tickets go straight to the chosen queue. Anything uncertain goes to a human reviewer. Jev supplies the decisions, and your pipeline owns the action, the logging and the fallback.

The cost math: In TypeSafe’s own three-question support-ticket example, one request used 392 input tokens. Assume about 400 tokens per ticket:

100,000 tickets a month × 400 tokens = 40 million input tokens

40 million tokens × $0.042 per million = about $1.68 a month in Jev usage

Add the NVMe 4 VPS at $9.49 a month, for roughly $11.17 a month in total

Longer tickets or extra customer context raise the token count, so measure your real average from the usage field in each response.

If your workflow needs multi-step tool use around the decision rather than a single classification, a fuller agent framework may fit better. Our guide to setting up OpenClaw on a VPS covers running that kind of framework on infrastructure you control.

Final thoughts

Hosting a Jev-based agent pipeline starts with a clear split of responsibilities. Your VPS runs the orchestration service, while Jev makes structured decisions through its hosted API.

Keep your API key secure, put your webhook behind HTTPS, and use a process manager like systemd to keep the service running after reboots. As your workflow grows, add workers, monitoring and confidence thresholds to stay responsive while keeping people in the loop.

Because inference runs remotely, this workload depends more on reliable uptime than on heavy server-side compute. A persistent VPS gives you root access, SSH and room to expand your pipeline as needed.

Ready to deploy your pipeline? Explore Bluehost Agent Hosting and choose an environment for running your orchestration service.

FAQs

Can I self-host Jev or run it offline on my VPS?
No. Jev is a hosted, closed-weight API, with no downloadable weights and no on-prem option. You host the pipeline that calls Jev over HTTPS, not the model itself. That keeps your server light, since inference happens on TypeSafe’s infrastructure.

Do I need a GPU on my VPS to run a Jev pipeline?
No. Jev runs inference remotely, so your pipeline is I/O-bound and does mostly network and light CPU work. A CPU-only VPS with a couple of vCPUs can handle many production pipelines, depending on concurrency and local workloads. Reserve larger tiers for heavy concurrency, local queues, vector memory or co-hosting several agents on one server.

What happens to my pipeline if the Jev API is unavailable?
Your code stays in control, so build for it. Add request timeouts and retries with backoff, and queue incoming events so nothing is lost during an outage. For decisions you cannot defer, fall back to a default route or send the item to human review. Log each failure so you can reconcile once the API recovers.

Is a VPS better than serverless for a Jev pipeline?
It depends on your traffic. A VPS suits persistent webhooks, schedules and steady load, with flat pricing and no cold starts to slow the first call. Serverless can fit rare, bursty jobs where paying per invocation is cheaper. For an always-on triage or routing pipeline, a persistent VPS process is usually the simpler fit.

Can I run a Jev-based agent pipeline on a VPS without hosting the model?
Yes. Your VPS only needs to run the pipeline’s orchestration code, integrations and supporting services. Jev runs through its hosted API, so the server does not need to store model files or handle model inference. This setup lets you choose a VPS based on the pipeline’s workload. Focus on CPU, memory, storage and network requirements for your application rather than GPU capacity for model inference.

Learn how A CPU-only VPS with a couple of vCPUs can handle many production pipelines, depending on concurrency and local workloads. Reserve larger tiers for heavy concurrency, local queues, vector memory or co-hosting several agents on one server.
en-US
en-US"},{"@type":"Question","@id":"https://www.bluehost.com/blog/host-jev-agent-pipeline-vps/#faq-question-1789665234342
{"@type":"Answer
Your code stays in control, so build for it. A VPS suits persistent webhooks, schedules and steady load, with flat pricing and no cold starts to slow the first call. Serverless can fit rare, bursty jobs where paying per invocation is cheaper. Your VPS only needs to run the pipeline’s orchestration code, integrations and supporting services. Jev runs through its hosted API, so the server does not need to store model files or handle model inference. This setup lets you choose a VPS based on the pipeline’s workload.
