Once it’s running, persistent storage keeps your chats, uploads and settings intact, and a VPS deployment lets you access it securely from more than just your own laptop.

Open WebUI brings your AI models, conversations and documents into one shared workspace you control. It connects to Ollama and compatible model APIs, giving you a flexible interface for working with local or cloud models.

This guide walks you through pip, Docker and Docker Compose installs, shows you how to connect Ollama, and covers running Open WebUI on a Bluehost VPS for access beyond your own computer. Self-hosting gives you more control, but privacy still depends on your setup, since external model providers and connected tools can still receive the content you share through them.

What do you need before installing Open WebUI

Check the requirements for your chosen method:

Operating system: A supported Linux, macOS or Windows environment. A virtual environment keeps its dependencies separate from other Python projects.

Step 1 Create a virtual environment

On macOS or Linux, open a Bash terminal and run:

mkdir -p open-webui-app
cd open-webui-app
python3.11 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate

On Windows, use PowerShell instead:

mkdir open-webui-app
cd open-webui-app
py -3.11 -m venv .venv

The Windows steps below call the environment’s executables directly, so PowerShell script activation is unnecessary.

Step 2 Install Open WebUI

In the activated macOS or Linux environment, run:

python -m pip install --upgrade pip
python -m pip install open-webui

In Windows PowerShell, run:

.\\.venv\\Scripts\\python.exe -m pip install --upgrade pip
.\\.venv\\Scripts\\python.exe -m pip install open-webui

Step 3 Set a data directory and start the server

Keep application data outside the virtual environment so replacing that environment does not remove your chats and uploads.

On macOS or Linux:

export DATA_DIR="$HOME/open-webui-data"
open-webui serve --host 127.0.0.1 --port 8080

On Windows PowerShell:

$env:DATA_DIR = "$env:USERPROFILE\\open-webui-data"
.\\.venv\\Scripts\\open-webui.exe serve --host 127.0.0.1 --port 8080

These commands bind the web server to your own computer. Keep the terminal running. When restarting, use the same project directory and set the same DATA_DIR again. Open WebUI also creates a .webui_secret_key file in the startup directory; preserve it to keep the signing key consistent.

Step 4 Create your account and connect a model

Open http://localhost:8080 and create the first administrator account. If Ollama already runs on the same computer, use http://localhost:11434 as its connection URL. Otherwise, connect a model provider using the Ollama section or API FAQ below.

Installing Open WebUI alone does not install a chat model. Once a model is available, select it and send a short test message.

How do you install Open WebUI using Docker

Docker packages the application and its dependencies in a container. The following examples keep the web interface on the host’s loopback address for initial setup. Use the VPS access instructions later in this guide when working on a remote server.

Step 1 Prepare a persistent secret

Create a dedicated directory and generate a secret once:

mkdir -p open-webui-docker
cd open-webui-docker
umask 077
if [ ! -f .env ]; then
printf 'WEBUI_SECRET_KEY=%s
' "$(openssl rand -hex 32)" > .env
fi

Keep .env private and reuse it when recreating the container. Do not commit it to a public repository. The key supports session signing and should not be replaced during routine updates.

Step 2 Choose one container option

The :main image runs Open WebUI with a separate model provider. The :ollama image also includes Ollama. These are alternative setups, so run only one of the commands below.

Option A: Open WebUI with Ollama already running on the host

docker run -d \\
--name open-webui \\
-p 127.0.0.1:3000:8080 \\
--add-host=host.docker.internal:host-gateway \\
--env-file .env \\
-e OLLAMA_BASE_URL=http://host.docker.internal:11434 \\
-v open-webui:/app/backend/data \\
--restart unless-stopped \\
ghcr.io/open-webui/open-webui:main

The host gateway makes the host reachable by name. Ollama must also listen on an address the container can reach. Follow the host-binding instructions below if the connection fails. For a hosted API setup, omit the host-gateway and Ollama URL lines, then add the provider in Open WebUI.

Option B: Open WebUI with bundled Ollama

docker run -d \\
--name open-webui \\
-p 127.0.0.1:3000:8080 \\
--env-file .env \\
-e OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD=1 \\
-v ollama:/root/.ollama \\
-v open-webui:/app/backend/data \\
--restart unless-stopped \\
ghcr.io/open-webui/open-webui:ollama

This example uses CPU inference and disables Ollama cloud features. It does not disable external providers or tools configured separately in Open WebUI. For supported NVIDIA GPU hardware, install the required drivers and NVIDIA Container Toolkit, then add –gpus all to the command. A GPU flag cannot provide hardware your server does not have.

The open-webui volume holds application data. The separate ollama volume stores downloaded models in the bundled setup. Named volumes survive container replacement, but they still need backups.

Step 3 Check startup and download a model

Check the container and its recent logs:

docker ps --filter name=open-webui
docker logs --tail 100 open-webui

For the bundled option, wait for startup and download a small model for a basic chat test:

docker exec -it open-webui ollama pull smollm2:360m
docker exec open-webui ollama ls

The SmolLM2 example is a small test model. Choose a model suited to your workload before relying on advanced reasoning or tool use. For Option A, run ollama pull smollm2:360m on the host where Ollama is installed.

Open http://localhost:3000, create the administrator account and select the downloaded model. Test a short conversation before adding documents or other integrations.

For production, use a specific release tag from the Open WebUI releases page. The :main and :ollama examples track changing builds and are intended to make the initial setup easy to follow.

How do you deploy Open WebUI with Docker Compose

Compose manages Open WebUI and Ollama as separate services. This is useful when you want to maintain each container independently. You can also use Portainer on a VPS for visual container administration.

Step 1 Create the project and secret

For a fresh Compose installation, create a separate project directory:

mkdir -p open-webui-compose
cd open-webui-compose
umask 077
if [ ! -f .env ]; then
printf 'WEBUI_SECRET_KEY=%s
' "$(openssl rand -hex 32)" > .env
fi

Use this as an alternative to the standalone Docker installation. Stop the earlier instance before reusing port 3000. Compose creates project-scoped volumes, so it does not automatically reuse data from a standalone Docker setup.

Step 2 Save the Compose configuration

Create compose.yaml in this directory with the following content:

services:
ollama:
image: ollama/ollama:latest
environment:
OLLAMA_HOST: "0.0.0.0:11434"
OLLAMA_NO_CLOUD: "1"
volumes:
- ollama:/root/.ollama
restart: unless-stopped
healthcheck:
test: ["CMD", "ollama", "ls"]
interval: 10s
timeout: 5s
retries: 10
start_period: 10s

open-webui:
image: ghcr.io/open-webui/open-webui:main
ports:
- "127.0.0.1:3000:8080"
env_file:
- .env
environment:
OLLAMA_BASE_URL: "http://ollama:11434"
volumes:
- open-webui:/app/backend/data
restart: unless-stopped
depends_on:
ollama:
condition: service_healthy

volumes:
ollama:
open-webui:

Ollama has no published host port. Open WebUI reaches it through the Compose network at http://ollama:11434. The health check waits for Ollama’s API to respond before Open WebUI starts; it does not download a model or confirm inference readiness.

Step 3 Start the services and pull a model

From the directory containing compose.yaml, run:

docker compose config --quiet
docker compose up -d
docker compose ps
docker compose exec ollama ollama pull smollm2:360m
docker compose exec ollama ollama ls

If a service fails, inspect its recent logs with docker compose logs –tail 100. Then open http://localhost:3000, create your administrator account and test the model. Pin tested release tags for both services before using the stack in production.

How do you connect Open WebUI to local or remote Ollama

The Open WebUI backend sends requests to Ollama. The connection address must therefore work from the backend’s environment, which may differ from your browser’s environment.

Step 1: Choose the correct connection address

Where Open WebUI runs

Where Ollama runs

Ollama connection URL

pip on your computer

Same computer

http://localhost:11434

Docker container

Docker host

http://host.docker.internal:11434

Compose service

Ollama service in the example stack

http://ollama:11434

Bundled Ollama image

Same container

http://localhost:11434

Any installation

Reachable private remote server

http://PRIVATE_IP:11434

Replace PRIVATE_IP with the Ollama server’s actual private or VPN address. A VPS cannot reach a home-network address such as 192.168.1.50 unless you establish routing, a VPN or a tunnel between those networks.

Set OLLAMA_BASE_URL before the first launch. For example, before starting a pip installation in Bash:

export OLLAMA_BASE_URL="http://localhost:11434"

For an existing instance, open Settings > Admin > Connections, edit the Ollama connection and save it. Saved connection settings can take precedence over a changed environment variable. OLLAMA_BASE_URLS, when set, also takes precedence over the singular variable.

Step 2: Adjust the Ollama listener when necessary

A native Ollama installation normally listens on 127.0.0.1:11434. That works for pip on the same machine, but a bridged Linux container or another computer needs a reachable listener.

Before expanding the listener, restrict network access to the intended Open WebUI host or Docker network. Ollama’s local API has no built-in authentication. Keep it behind a private network, VPN or appropriately secured proxy.

On a Linux host where Ollama runs as a systemd service:

sudo systemctl edit ollama.service

Add this override:

[Service]
Environment="OLLAMA_HOST=0.0.0.0:11434"

Then reload and restart the service:

sudo systemctl daemon-reload
sudo systemctl restart ollama

This binds Ollama to all host interfaces, so the access restrictions must already be in place. For Docker-to-host access, allow the actual Docker bridge subnet rather than assuming a fixed subnet. A private-interface binding is another option when that interface is reachable from Open WebUI.

On macOS, set the variable with launchctl setenv OLLAMA_HOST “0.0.0.0:11434”, then quit and reopen Ollama. On Windows, quit Ollama, set the OLLAMA_HOST user environment variable to 0.0.0.0:11434 and restart the app. Apply the same network restrictions. See Ollama’s environment setup instructions for your operating system.

The Compose example already configures a container listener and leaves its port unpublished. It does not need the host systemd override.

Step 3: Verify reachability and model availability

For pip with Ollama on the same machine, check the model-list endpoint:

curl --fail http://localhost:11434/api/tags

On Windows PowerShell, use curl.exe for the same command. For a container or remote setup, verify the connection in Open WebUI’s administrator settings and check the relevant container logs. A successful host-side request alone does not prove that a container can reach the server.

An empty model list means the server responded but has no downloaded models. Pull a model into that Ollama instance, then refresh Open WebUI. You can also manage downloads under Settings > Admin > Connections > Manage Ollama API Connections.

When should you move Open WebUI to a VPS

A local installation works well for personal use and testing. A VPS is useful when a team needs access independent of one person’s computer. Laptop sleep, shutdowns and home-network interruptions can make a local instance unavailable.

Open WebUI’s application requirements are separate from model inference requirements. A CPU VPS can host the interface while a compatible API or separate Ollama server handles inference. Small local models can run on CPUs, but larger models, longer contexts and concurrent requests need more resources.

If Ollama still runs on your laptop, moving only Open WebUI to a VPS will not keep those models available when the laptop is offline. For continuous access, the model backend must also remain reachable.

Access the VPS securely during setup

The examples above bind the interface to loopback. On a VPS, localhost refers to that server, not your computer. From a terminal on your own computer, create an SSH tunnel:

ssh -N -L 3000:127.0.0.1:3000 USER@VPS_IP

Replace USER and VPS_IP with your SSH account and server address. Leave the tunnel running and open http://localhost:3000 on your computer. For the pip example, use 8080:127.0.0.1:8080 and browse to port 8080 instead.

Create the administrator account before inviting others. For ongoing team access, configure an HTTPS reverse proxy or a private access service. A proxy running on the host can forward to 127.0.0.1:3000; a containerized proxy needs appropriate container networking.

Follow Open WebUI’s HTTPS guidance for the public URL, WebSocket support and streaming responses. Restrict signups and user permissions, and keep Ollama internal. On Linux, published Docker ports can bypass ordinary UFW rules, so do not rely on UFW alone to protect a publicly published container port.

Why choose Bluehost for Open WebUI hosting

Bluehost Open WebUI provides a server environment for a persistent Open WebUI workspace. Full root access and Docker support let you control the application, model connections and access configuration.

Our NVMe 4 plan includes 2 vCPUs, 4 GB DDR5 RAM, and 100 GB NVMe storage, making it a practical starting point for evaluating Open WebUI with externally hosted inference. VPS performance and value can vary by provider and workload, as reflected in VPSBenchmarks’ May 2026 VPS value benchmarks. Size the deployment around your users, document workload, and model requirements, and monitor actual resource use..

Access beyond your laptop: Keep the workspace available without depending on your personal computer’s power state.

NVMe storage: Store uploads, application data and knowledge-base files on fast storage. Overall RAG performance also depends on compute, models and configuration.

Persistent application data: Configure Docker volumes so chats, users and settings survive container replacement. Maintain separate backups.

Control as you grow: Manage providers, user access and optional integrations, then upgrade resources when the workload requires them.

Self-managed hosting means you handle operating-system updates, container maintenance, security configuration and backups. Hosting fees also do not include third-party model API usage. Compare current Bluehost VPS plans and pricing before choosing a term.

Final thoughts

Docker packages the application into a single container, and Compose keeps Open WebUI and Ollama running as separate, independently maintained services.

Before sharing your workspace, verify the model connection, preserve its data and configure secure access. That last step matters more than it looks. A workspace that only lives on your own laptop is only as available as your laptop is. Close the lid, restart for an update or step away from your home network, and the workspace goes with it, along with anyone else who was counting on reaching it.

That tradeoff is fine for a personal setup you’re testing on your own time. It becomes a real limitation the moment other people depend on the workspace, or the moment you need it running when you’re not at your desk. At that point, the question worth sitting with isn’t whether Open WebUI works locally, it clearly does, but whether your current setup can keep working without you.

If the answer is no, Open WebUI hosting on a Bluehost VPS gives that workspace a home that doesn’t depend on your laptop’s power state, your home network or you remembering to leave a terminal window open.

    <rect x="99" y="545" fill="#fff" opacity="0" width="390" height="100"></rect>

FAQ

How do I fix connection refused errors between Open WebUI and Ollama?
Connection errors occur when Ollama binds only to localhost (127.0.0.1), blocking Docker containers.
