These steps show how to use Google eSignature on a computer, following Google&#8217;s how-to linked above. Finalize the document first<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google locks the PDF once you send, and changes require cancelling and resending. If you turn on automatic reminders, the first goes out after 72 hours. More follow every 3 days for up to 9 days or until the document is signed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-how-to-request-an-esignature-on-a-pdf-in-google-drive\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How to request an eSignature on a PDF in Google Drive<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google Drive eSignature works on PDFs stored in Drive, such as a vendor&#8217;s contract. Open the PDF, select <strong>Menu<\/strong> (three dots), then select <strong>eSignature<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Add signers and drag in fields the same way you would with eSignature in Google Docs, then click <strong>Request signature<\/strong>. PDFs also support the custom text fields listed above.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-how-signers-complete-a-google-esignature-request\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How signers complete a Google eSignature request<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Signers start from the request email and finish inside the document. To stop a request, cancel it from the PDF&#8217;s menu.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A request is complete once all signers sign, and Google then emails everyone. Google saves copies in two places:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Your copy:<\/strong> It saves to the original folder, or to My Drive if you can&#8217;t edit that folder or its sharing would block signers.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Signer copies:<\/strong> Each signer gets a copy in their own My Drive.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Google&#8217;s signer terms, covered in the legal section below, note that copies may not reach a counterparty without a Drive account. Business Starter and free Gmail accounts aren&#8217;t on Google&#8217;s list. The <a href=\"https:\/\/workspace.google.com\/resources\/esignature\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Google Workspace eSignature page<\/a> says the tool is designed to comply with the US Electronic Signatures in Global and National Commerce Act (ESIGN). Google also cites EU simple electronic signature rules and certificates from an Adobe Approved Trust List (AATL) member.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Under <a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/uscode\/text\/15\/7001\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">the federal ESIGN Act<\/a>, a signature or contract in interstate commerce generally can&#8217;t be denied legal effect solely because it&#8217;s electronic. The law also doesn&#8217;t require anyone to accept an electronic signature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.law.cornell.edu\/uscode\/text\/15\/7003\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">ESIGN&#8217;s specific exceptions<\/a> place some documents outside that general rule. Some exceptions cover documents to the extent other laws govern them, such as wills and family law, while others apply outright. Check with a lawyer before sending these for eSignature:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Wills, codicils and testamentary trusts<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Adoption, divorce and family law<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Uniform Commercial Code (UCC) provisions other than sections 1-107 and 1-206 and Articles 2 and 2A<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Court orders and official court documents<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Utility shut-off notices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Default, foreclosure or eviction notices on a primary residence<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Cancellation of health or life insurance benefits<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Product recall notices<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Hazardous-materials documents<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><a href=\"https:\/\/workspace.google.com\/terms\/google-workspace-individual-terms\/esignature-signer\/\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Google&#8217;s eSignature signer terms<\/a> add powers of attorney and deeds as documents needing wet ink in many jurisdictions. Google says it can&#8217;t guarantee an enforceable contract and advises using eSignature with counterparties in the same jurisdiction or consulting a lawyer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Note:<\/strong> This section is general information and isn&#8217;t legal advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 id=\"h-how-admins-turn-esignature-on-or-off\" class=\"wp-block-heading\">How admins turn eSignature on or off<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">eSignature is on by default for supported editions, and admins can switch it on or off for the organization or by organizational unit. You need the Drive &amp; Docs administrator privilege to make the change. <a href=\"https:\/\/knowledge.workspace.google.com\/admin\/drive\/turn-esignature-on-or-off-for-users\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\">Google&#8217;s admin instructions for eSignature<\/a> list these steps:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>In the Admin console, go to <strong>Menu &gt; Apps &gt; Google Workspace &gt; Drive and Docs<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>eSignature<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Select an organizational unit if you want to limit the change.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Choose <strong>On<\/strong> or <strong>Off<\/strong>.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Click <strong>Save<\/strong>, or <strong>Override<\/strong> for an organizational unit.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Changes can take up to 24 hours.
