With many businesses successfully moving work away from the office, they&#8217;re likely to continue embracing remote work once the pandemic is over.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The longevity of remote work is just one of the inevitable legacies of COVID-19. The pandemic will have even more lasting impacts on how businesses will operate in the future.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh6.googleusercontent.com\/s5FlwNGRa27PqTJya33u637mR--ZzOF4qAui-BcQuA2iis5vBk--DVJlWSGs9NQdTOPFMS72-sGUbLYk5mwONg-ZrVL05L0COGkKLZ_UIm9u89mD2BEMWaJLgfv3dVuLk5V5yzah\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some predictions for how companies will operate in 2021 and beyond, including:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li>Remote work for the long haul<\/li><li>Drastic changes to office spaces<\/li><li>Increased flexibility for employees<\/li><li>A more competitive job market<\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Remote Work Is Here to Stay<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In July 2020, business leaders at Google <a href=\"https:\/\/www.theverge.com\/2020\/7\/27\/21340038\/google-remote-working-employees-2021-twitter-facebook-alphabet\">announced<\/a> that the company would be working remotely through at least July 2021. Following this announcement, many other companies followed suit. This date could be pushed back depending on how long it takes to make and distribute a coronavirus vaccine and how long schools continue distance learning.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Companies that were once hesitant about remote work will likely be more open to it after the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluehost.com\/blog\/how-small-businesses-are-adapting-to-covid-19\/\">pandemic<\/a> ends. Work-from-home mandates were a necessary experiment that proved remote jobs work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One <a href=\"https:\/\/www.remoteyear.com\/blog\/what-is-remote-work\">study<\/a> found that two-thirds of managers saw increased productivity from employees who worked remotely. Furthermore, research from <a href=\"https:\/\/hbswk.hbs.edu\/item\/how-companies-benefit-when-employees-work-remotely\">Harvard Business School<\/a> found a 4.4% increase in productivity from employees who were free to work from anywhere. This proven increase in productivity will mean that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bluehost.com\/blog\/20-remote-work-resources\/\">remote work<\/a> is here to stay.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But for how long?&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chris Herd, the founder of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.firstbasehq.com\/\">FirstBaseHQ<\/a>, predicts that the majority of the white-collar workforce will be working from home by 2030.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh3.googleusercontent.com\/ij0ketHQw7u5VyXYN1eEvmxG39eg4Eb6U1olaSR_gMCd1FY803_JjLBiP3MHDY7QwxzoqL2y2e24FKz1xcjUEQvSYVKSB35zdf1s8g2SF3zzYAaUYKwhjCVtPOX99w7jAF63NtFS\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Offices Will Change<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/lh5.googleusercontent.com\/oquSONGaL1phOo6xEsF0WhYNZvT08S0AATYkKV1_edu22yaqTTNM5Yik-vFci6cuE4LV2lFzl8uXWtdvjLbVlmq9Q0jwKsZfTub1klrj5h1AHZmRo0Wr_hTOShxLpr6bfXive0pr\" alt=\"\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>With the flexibility to work from home, companies will no longer need premium office space in expensive cities. They&#8217;ll downsize and save significantly on real estate.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>According to a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.remoteyear.com\/blog\/what-is-remote-work\">report by Flexjobs<\/a>, companies can save $22,000 each year on office space<em> per remote employee<\/em>. A 100-person company that moves to entirely remote work will have $2.2 million in savings \u2014 which can be reinvested in the business and remote work tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The remaining office real estate may start to look more like coworking spaces than traditional workplaces, with dedicated desks and offices. Coworkers might share desks based on a rotating schedule. The office will be a place for collaboration rather than working in solitude, so there will be more conference rooms and fewer cubicles.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Alternatively, Herd <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/chris_herd\/status\/1294590291761037312\">predicts<\/a> that companies may pay for coworking space subscriptions for employees rather than paying for their own office spaces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">More Flexibility for Employees<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>As companies continue to work remotely, employees will have more flexibility in where they live and when they work.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>People will move to more affordable areas and away from expensive business centers like New York City and the Bay Area. Company headquarters may also move away from urban centers. Smaller cities with cheap rent will become attractive to both employers and employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With teams spread across time zones and countries, 9-5 will no longer be the norm. The focus will be on <em>what<\/em> work gets done rather than <em>when<\/em>, <em>where<\/em>, or <em>how<\/em> it gets done.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Employees will experience a better work-life balance. Work will begin to fit around people&#8217;s lifestyles, rather than dictate it. Employees will need to sharpen their skills to land and keep jobs. Companies will have their pick of top talent from around the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>COVID-19 has had a devastating effect on public health and the economy.
