Important: If your name servers are hosted by Bluehost and your domain is not registered directly with us, please note that you cannot edit DNS records through our account manager, and you must make the necessary change directly through the platform of your domain provider.

What Are Nameservers?
Nameservers are like the guides of the internet. When you register a domain name for your website, such as www.example.com, that name needs to be translated into numbers (IP addresses) that computers use to identify each other on the internet. Nameservers are the specialized servers on the internet that do this job.
Here’s how it works: Each domain is assigned to a set of nameservers that store the DNS records for that domain. These records contain important information, such as the IP address for your website and the addresses for handling your emails. When someone types your domain name into their browser, their computer contacts these nameservers to find out the corresponding IP address. The nameservers respond with the necessary information to direct the user's computer to the right server for your website.
What Is DNS Management?
DNS management is essentially the behind-the-scenes coordination of your domain name's settings. This system, known as the Domain Name System (DNS), is crucial because it helps turn easy-to-remember domain names, like www.example.com, into IP addresses (the numerical identifiers that computers use to find each other on the internet). Managing your DNS effectively means making sure that people can reliably access your website and send emails to your domain without delays. It involves setting up and adjusting various records—such as A, MX, and CNAME records—that control website traffic routing, email delivery, and more. By keeping these settings accurate, you enhance your site's reliability and security.
How Does DNS Work?
DNS, or the Domain Name System, works like a phonebook for the internet. When you type a web address into your browser, like www.example.com, DNS is what helps your browser find the right server so it can load the website for you.
Here's how it works: Each device connected to the internet has a unique IP address, which is a series of numbers that's tough for humans to remember. DNS translates the easy-to-remember domain names into these numerical IP addresses. For instance, when you enter a domain name into your browser, your computer sends a request to a DNS server. This server sifts through its database to find the matching IP address for that domain name. Once found, it sends this IP address back to your computer. This then allows your browser to make the right connection to the website you want to visit, therefore streamlining your internet browsing with ease and efficiency.

Accessing the DNS Zone Editor
Using the Zone Editor is the first step in managing your DNS records. This can be accessed through the Hosting tab, Websites tab, or Domains tab.
Note: You may see a pop-up prompting you to acknowledge that these are advanced settings, and changing them comes with risk to your website and related services. Click CONTINUE to proceed to the DNS Editor.
Hosting Tab
- Log in to your account manager.
- Click the Hosting tab located in the left-side navigation menu. If you have multiple hosting packages, make sure to select the correct hosting account to manage.
- Scroll down to click CPANEL under Quick Links. The cPanel will load.
- Scroll down to the Domains section and click Zone Editor.
- To Add a DNS record under the Zone Editor, click the + sign of the record you want to add.
Websites Tab
- Log in to your account manager.
- Click the Websites tab located in the left-side navigation menu.
- Locate the domain for which you wish to update DNS and click the SETTINGS button.
- Click the DOMAINS tab.
- Next to the domain you wish to update DNS for, click the (vertical ellipses) icon, then click Advanced DNS Editor.
The Zone Editor will load. Here, you can Add records or click on Manage and edit records.
Domains Tab
You can also update DNS from the Domains tab.
- Log in to your account manager.
- Click the Domains tab located in the left-side navigation menu.
- Scroll down and click the ˅ symbol to expand the Advanced Tools section.
- Here, you will have the option to manage the following:
- Nameservers (DNS)
- Advanced DNS Records.
- Click Manage next to Advanced DNS Records.
Modifying Existing DNS Record
Follow the steps below when changing or modifying an existing record after you have accessed the DNS Zone Editor. If you aren't sure which DNS Record to update, see DNS Record Definitions for more information.
Zone Editor
- Next to the record you wish to modify, click the Edit button.
- Enter new values, then click Save Record when finished.
Domains Tab
- Under Manage Advanced DNS Records, find the record you wish to modify.
- Click the 🖉 (edit) button.
- Enter any changes you wish to make on the required fields.
- Click Edit to save changes.
Adding New Record
Follow the steps below when adding a new record after you have accessed the DNS Zone Editor.
Zone Editor
- Click the + Add Record button.
- Fill in the required fields:
- Click Save Record when finished.
Domains Tab
- Click the + ADD RECORD button.

Fill in the required fields once the Add Advanced DNS Records pop-up appears. Additional fields may appear based on the specific record you are in the process of adding. Fill out details as instructed by the DNS record provider.
- Choose the Record Type.
- Set the TTL (time to live).
- Lastly, to add the new record, click the Add button.
Take Note: Other fields may appear depending on the type of record you are creating. Fill out details as instructed by the DNS record provider.
Deleting Record
Follow the steps below when deleting a record after you have accessed the DNS Zone Editor.
Important: Please confirm that deleting a DNS record is necessary before proceeding. Removing a host record will interrupt any services tied to your domain. For example, deleting an MX record will cause any connected email service to stop functioning.
Zone Editor
- Find the record you wish to delete.
- Click the Delete button, then click Continue to confirm.
Domains Tab
- Under Manage Advanced DNS Records, find the record you wish to delete.
- Click the 🖉 (edit) button.
- Click the DELETE link in the top right corner.
- Finally, click the DELETE button on the confirmation window that pops up.
- DNS changes can take up to 24-48 hours to take effect across the internet.
- Also, DNS changes can take 24-48 hours to reflect in the DNS editor.
