Fix Password Protected Directory Continual Prompts

You can set a password to protect directories so that every time a user tries to open a protected folder, they will be prompted to enter a username and password before they can access your content. However, sometimes you may have problems with multiple password prompts on your password protected directory. Learn how to fix password protected directory continual prompts.

What Causes Password Protected Directory Continual Prompts?

The problem is that you have more (multiple) folders underneath the one that is password protected.

How to Fix It

If you move all the files out and delete that folder, it will not ask you multiple times. Please update all your links, as they are still pointing to the old folder.

Example: password protected folder[]

|--- subfolder (this is where you are linking to)

If you move all links, pictures, HTML files etc. and then remove the subfolder, the password protect program will no longer ask for the password multiple times. You also have the option to remove the password protect option.

How to Remove Password Protection

Follow these steps:

  1. Log in to your Bluehost Account Manager.
  2. Click Hosting on the left menu.
    Hosting tab
  3. Look for the Quick Links tile, then click the CPANEL button.
    CPANEL button under Quick Links
  4. Under the Files section, click the Directory Privacy link.
    Directory Privacy icon under Files
  5. Once you have accessed the Directory Privacy tool in cPanel, navigate the folder structure and select the directory you want. To open a folder and see its contents, click the folder.
  6. Click EDIT under the Actions column for the folder in which you want to set the Password Protect. Edit icons next to folders
  7. Untick the Password protect this directory box, then hit Save.
check box for password protect and Save button

You have successfully removed password protection for your directory.
