Automattic Doubles Its Valuation From 2019<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

It\u2019s a big year for Automattic. Its CEO, Matt Mullenweg, announced that the company is now valued at $7.5 billion<\/a> after buying back $250 million worth of shares from its current and former employees.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Automattic is now worth more than double its 2019 value when it raised $300 million at a $3 billion valuation<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Automattic also raised an additional $288 million in funding last February. Then, the company acquired Parse.ly<\/a>, Day One<\/a>, and Pocket Casts<\/a> and invested in Element<\/a> and Titan<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In an interview with Cheddar News\u2019 Michelle Castillo<\/a>, Mullenweg says he plans to use the funds to invest in WooCommerce. He also addressed speculation about Automattic\u2019s IPO plans, saying it isn’t on their immediate radar yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Jetpack Acquires Social Image Generator<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to the announcement<\/a> made on Jetpack\u2019s blog, Daniel Post, the plugin\u2019s creator, will be joining Automattic to continue developing the plugin and other social media tools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Social Image Generator launched in Feb. 2021 and was offered at $39\/year. It will soon be integrated as part of Jetpack\u2019s social media automation suite.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Automattic Acquires Headless CMS Frontity<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Automattic has acquired Frontity<\/a>, a headless WordPress framework<\/a> used for building themes with React.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to the announcement on Frontity\u2019s website<\/a>, the acquisition will directly benefit WordPress as Frontity\u2019s team will be focusing on helping it achieve its goal of improving Full Site Editing<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Automattic invested in Frontity in 2020 and began a working relationship with its founders Luis Herranz and Pablo Postigo. But the acquisition doesn\u2019t mean the framework will be merged<\/a> with WordPress anytime soon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honors WP Acquires Immerseus<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Easily Amused e-learning company Honors WP acquired Immerseus<\/a>, a plugin company specializing in e-learning plugins for LearnDash<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Honors WP initially acquired seven of Immerseus\u2019 plugins, but Immerseus founder Jack Kitterhing tweeted<\/a> that Honors WP has now wholly acquired the company.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

WordPress Opens Applications for In-Person WordCamps<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

WordPress is now accepting applications for in-person WordCamps, provided that the event meets the updated community guidelines for organizing an event during a pandemic. The announcement<\/a> comes after deliberation that lasted more than six weeks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The updated guidelines allow in-person WordCamps if local public health authorities permit in-person gatherings and the region passes the safety checklist<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, if the area does not pass the list, it can still hold in-person WordCamps if COVID tests and vaccinations are available.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The WordPress community team expects in-person attendees to be responsible for their health and participate if they’ve been fully vaccinated, recovered from COVID within the last three months, or tested negative before attending.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Support for the Classic Editor was meant to cease in 2021, but according to an announcement from WordPress<\/a>, the plugin will enjoy continued support \u201cuntil the end of 2022 or as long as necessary.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Classic Editor<\/a> was published to help the transition to the Gutenberg plugin<\/a>. It currently has over five million users.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
