How to Migrate from Blogger to WordPress

Since Blogger (Blogspot) isn't an actual hosting company, there's no real way to transfer the site from Blogger to your account with us directly.

However, Blogger has a feature that will allow you to export your site content to a more universal format.

WordPress supports importing directly from your blogger account. You need to have WordPress hosting with Bluehost. Then, install WordPress in cPanel. For instructions, check out How to Install WordPress.

Once you have installed WordPress, proceed with the steps below.

How to Maintain SEO After Blogger to WordPress Migration

To preserve SEO, you can redirect your old site to your new site. Before redirecting, set up your permalinks in WordPress to resemble the structure of your Blogger link.

You can then install using the best plugin for Blogger to WordPress migration. Check out Blogger To WordPress – WordPress plugin for more information about the plugin and how to set it up.

Updating Internal and External Links

After migrating your site from Blogger to WordPress, ensure all links within your content correctly point to your new WordPress URLs because this is crucial for user experience and SEO.

  • Internal links. Use a plugin like Better Search Replace or Velvet Blues Update URLs to scan and update internal links in bulk. These tools allow you to replace outdated URLs with your new WordPress site's URLs across posts and pages efficiently.
  • External links. For external backlinks, consider reaching out to the webmasters of sites linking to your Blogger content. Politely request that they update the URLs to your new WordPress site. While not all may comply, this can significantly help maintain the strength of your backlink profile.

SEO Plugins and Tools

Maintain and improve your SEO standings by optimizing your newly migrated WordPress site for search engines. You can do this with the following:

  • Using WordPress SEO plugins. Yoast SEO is highly recommended for its comprehensive features that guide you in optimizing your content, generating sitemaps, and improving readability. Alternatives include Rank Math and All in One SEO Pack, which offer similar functionalities to enhance your site's SEO.
  • Employing monitoring tools. Post-migration, keep a close eye on your site's SEO performance using Google Analytics for traffic insights and Google Search Console for monitoring indexing status, crawl errors, and understanding how Google views your site. These tools are vital for spotting issues early and guiding your ongoing SEO strategy.

Customizing Your WordPress Site

Creating a visually appealing and functional WordPress site is key to attracting and retaining visitors. Consider the following:

  • Select the appropriate theme. Choose a WordPress theme that aligns with your brand and desired website functionality. Themes like Astra and OceanWP offer flexibility and customization options to help match your former Blogger site's design or create a new look.
  • Install essential plugins. Extend your site's capabilities with plugins focusing on security (Wordfence Security) and performance (WP Super Cache). Also, consider using contact form plugins like Contact Form 7 and social sharing tools like Social Snap to enhance user engagement.

Troubleshooting Common Migration Issues

Several issues may arise during the migration process, but most can be resolved with some troubleshooting.

  • Missing images. If images fail to import correctly, you may need to manually re-upload them to WordPress or use a plugin like Import External Images to automate the process.
  • Formatting problems. Differences in HTML or CSS support between Blogger and WordPress might result in formatting issues. Use the WordPress editor to correct these issues manually, or consider employing a developer for complex problems.
  • Broken links. After migration, check for broken links using tools like Broken Link Checker. This plugin helps identify and fix broken links to ensure a smooth user experience.

Summary

You can migrate a website from Blogger to WordPress while maintaining the website's SEO. Since Blogger is not a hosting company, transferring the site from Blogger to a hosting account directly is not possible. However, Blogger has a feature to export site content to a more universal format, which can be imported into WordPress. To maintain SEO, the website can be redirected to the new site, and permalinks should be set up in WordPress to resemble the structure of the Blogger link. A plugin can also be used to aid in the migration process.
