What is IPS tag and What do you need to know
Every .uk domain has a unique identifier called a registrar tag. This tag, previously known as an IPS tag, simply points to the company currently managing your domain name registration and DNS services. It's a security measure implemented by Nominet, the registry for .uk domains.
It's commonly thought to stand for Internet Provider Security tag. Regardless, Nominet now prefers the clearer term Registrar tag.
Why is the IPS tag important?
The IPS tag becomes your key when switching providers! It acts like a unique identifier that needs to be transferred between registrars during a .uk domain move. This ensures a smooth and secure transfer process, preventing any mix-ups or unauthorized changes.
You will need to contact us to complete your .co.uk domain name transfer.
If you change the IPS tag without contacting us, the domain will be moved into Bluehost with no account to control it, and you can easily lose your domain name.
What is Bluehost's’ IPS Tag?
To transfer a domain to Bluehost, you will need to update the tag on the domain to NSI-US, which is our IPS tag for .uk domains:
[tag = NSI-US]
Some domain registrars use a "handshake" system for incoming transfers. This means they might require manual approval from your current registrar, even after you've updated the IPS tag (now called registrar tag) to NSI-US.

The IPS tag, though no longer the official term (now called a Registrar Tag), is still a relevant piece of information for managing your .UK domain. Here's a quick recap:
- What it was: The IPS tag (Internet Provider Security tag, though the meaning is debated) identified the company managing a specific .UK domain.
- What it did: This tag ensured proper registration and Domain Name System (DNS) services for your .UK domain.
- Why it might still matter:
- Transfers: The IPS tag (now the registrar tag) is crucial when transferring your .UK domain to a new registrar
- Understanding history: You might still see references to "IPS Tag" in older resources.
- What to do:
- Transferring? Update the registrar tag to your new provider's code for a smooth transfer.
- Encountering "IPS Tag"? It likely refers to the current registrar tag system.
