What is an IPS Tag and What Do You Need to Know

Every .uk domain has a unique identifier called a "Tag." The IPS tag, also known as the "Registrar tag," simply points to the company currently managing your domain name registration and DNS services. It's a security measure implemented by Nominet, the registry for the .uk domains.

Why is the IPS (Registrar) Tag Important?

The IPS or Registrar tag becomes your key when switching registrars! It acts like a unique identifier that needs to be transferred between registrars during a .uk domain move. This ensures a smooth and secure transfer process, preventing any mix-ups or unauthorized changes.

Summary

The IPS (Registrar) Tag is a required identifier for managing and transferring .uk domains, as it indicates which registrar is responsible for the domain. This system helps ensure secure and authorized domain management under Nominet’s policies. However, Bluehost does not support .uk domain transfers or management. Customers should not change their IPS or registrar tag to Bluehost, as this is unsupported and may lead to access or control issues. If you own a .uk domain, it must remain with your current registrar for registration, management, and renewal.
