A Simple Guide to Customizing Your WordPress Permalink Settings

Home Blog Blogging A Simple Guide to Customizing Your WordPress Permalink Settings
A permalink is the web address that visitors will use to link to your article or the address that you will use to send a link to your WordPress site in an email message. Permalinks are intended to be shared and used indefinitely. With the Internet (and websites) changing all the time, understanding how to create permanent links back to your content is critical. Consider WordPress permalinks to be your Internet’s permanent “address”. A clear and descriptive address aids both users and search engines in finding your content. Why is WordPress Permalink essential? Setting up a solid permalink structure is essential in a digital world where good search engine optimization plays a critical role in your website’s visibility. And by permalink structure, we mean all the permalinks on your websites, such as pages, posts, and even categories and tags. One of the best parts about creating a WordPress site is that you can build your online presence with a permanent URL to your site. This popular CMS platform includes a variety of solutions that allow you to create a search engine and user-friendly permalink structure. Whether you’re a blogger or an e-commerce user, each of your posts will have its own unique URL called a permalink.

WordPress Default URL Settings

WordPress creates default URLs for blog posts and pages for new users based on the asset’s unique ID number. The WordPress dashboard settings menu displays various URL permalink structures, such as post name. These are the default permalinks. WordPress hosting site settings are ineffective in terms of user experience (UX) and search engine optimization (SEO). A blog post URL that is simply an article ID, for example, provides no useful information to a potential reader. WordPress users want a URL that is clear, understandable, and memorable. Similarly, you never want to pass up an opportunity to highlight your keywords to search engines through your link structure. Fortunately, you can easily change this in your WordPress admin panel. Most users will wish to use the “Permalinks Settings” screen (available under the “Settings” menu in the WordPress Dashboard) to choose a different option, such as post name, to create more legible, keyword-rich URLs. These various WordPress permalink options make it simple to create a unique WordPress URL structure. The default WordPress link structure is not ideal for the majority of users. The purpose of your permalink is to build a simple URL structure that both humans and search engines can understand. WordPress offers a variety of permalink choices for website owners to select from. However, the use of day and name information in permalinks is unappealing and provides users with little actionable information. If you have a WordPress blog, for example, your permalinks should allow your users to quickly comprehend your content without having to browse the entire page. WordPress permalinks improve the usability and overall appearance of your links. By clicking on any of the radio buttons in your WordPress Settings menu, you can choose different permalink structure options. Here, you will get to see various types of permalink structures from which you can choose and set.  For instance, you can either choose ‘Post Name’, which seems to be a meaningful approach of optimizing the permalink structure to many people. Otherwise, you can choose options like ‘month and the name’ or ‘Day and name’. Both options are good to go, nonetheless, if you want your articles to be versatile and timeless, you can choose the ‘Post Name’ option as date is anyway displayed in blogs.  For example: https://myblog.com/best-movies-to-watch-during-holidays/ is much better than URLs mentioned below: Day and name: http://myblog.com/2021/12/01/sample-post/ Month and name: http://myblog.com/2022/12/sample-post/ Numeric: http://myblog.com/sample-post/375 Post name: http://myblog.com/sample-post/ You can use any of the options on your WordPress Dashboard Settings menu, or you can create your own URL structure. WordPress users with more advanced skills can create custom bases and tag URL addresses. Simply select an option (via the radio button) to set your permalink preferences, and WordPress will take care of the rest. As a general rule, use keyword-rich, descriptive URLs that provide real value to users. This is the “Post name” permalink option for most WordPress sites. And, of course, there’s no need to manually rewrite URLs. WordPress handles changes to URL structure automatically. You don’t have to be a coding expert to create a custom structure. Instead, select a WordPress structure that reflects your site’s goals. A permalink in WordPress should emphasise search engine optimization and provide value to both search engines and visitors to your site. For example, if you run a news site, including the publication date and category of an article in the URL structure is critical to how visitors access content on your site. Permalink structures should be simple and clear. Don’t make it too difficult for people to access your site. Again, this isn’t a thorough list.
