WordCamp Sylhet 2024 has wrapped up, and it was a fantastic two days filled with learning, networking, and fun. Hosted at the Central Auditorium of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology on May 10-11, the event brought together a diverse group of people passionate about WordPress. Behind the scenes, the organizing team and volunteers worked tirelessly to ensure that everything was in place to deliver a truly memorable experience.

What are WordCamps?  

WordCamps are community-led events that cater to anyone using WordPress, including bloggers, designers, developers, marketers, and businesses. These gatherings are ideal for acquiring new skills, networking with peers, and deepening involvement in the WordPress community. 

The conference is celebrated for its emphasis on knowledge sharing and learning. Attendees engage in a variety of sessions, workshops, and presentations by industry experts. 

The focus of WordCamps is on building connections and fostering a supportive atmosphere, free from aggressive sales pitches. The community-driven spirit encourages attendees to share expertise, insights, and ideas, enhancing mutual success. 

Event highlights: A recap 

The event kicked off with Contributor Day on May 10, where attendees collaborated on various aspects of the WordPress project. It wasn’t just about coding; individuals from all backgrounds contributed their skills to enhance the platform. The atmosphere was electric, as participants engaged in fruitful discussions and hands-on activities. More on the fun below! 

The main conference day on May 11 was nothing short of inspiring. The venue buzzed with excitement as industry experts and seasoned WordPress users shared their insights through engaging talks and panel discussions. The topics ranged from the latest WordPress technology and best practices to innovative approaches for optimizing web design and enhancing user experience. 

Contributor Day: More than just code 

The first day of WordCamp Sylhet was dedicated to Contributor Day, a highly anticipated event where WordPress enthusiasts come together and discover the art of contributing to the WordPress ecosystem. It was a day filled with excitement, learning, and collaborative spirit.  

The atmosphere on Contributor Day was electric, with individuals collaborating, sharing ideas, and working together to improve the WordPress platform. The day was designed to unite everyone who loves WordPress, the open-source platform behind more than a third of websites online, regardless of their background or skills. 

Our team had a great time collaborating to work towards making WordPress even better! 

Bluehost at WordCamp

Diverse lineup of sessions

The sessions and workshops at the event were carefully curated to cater to a wide range of interests and skill levels within the WordPress community. Each session was designed to delve deeper into specific aspects of WordPress, from beginner-friendly introductions to advanced development techniques. Workshops offered hands-on experiences where attendees can apply new knowledge in real-time, guided by experts passionate about their fields. 

Topics such as SEO optimization, custom theme development, and effective plugin usage were covered, ensuring that every participant could find something relevant to their needs. These sessions not only provided valuable insights and practical skills but also sparked lively discussions and debates that enriched the learning experience for all.

Insights from a few sessions:  

Anzuman Ara Chowdhury from Fluent Forms presented a talk on “Diversity, equity, inclusivity & belonging in Bangladesh while contributing to WordPress.” This session explored how diverse contributions can enhance the WordPress community and foster a more inclusive environment within the tech space in Bangladesh. 

Mohammad Emran Hasan discussed “High Performance MySQL.” His talk focused on optimizing MySQL setups for enhanced performance, crucial for developers looking to improve database efficiency and application speed. 

Sashoto Seeam from LifeData enlightened attendees with his insights on the “Importance of Human-Centered Design.” He emphasized designing with the end-user in mind, which is essential for creating more intuitive and effective digital products. 

Sumit Saha from Analyzen delivered a presentation titled “Breaking Ground: A fresh perspective on WordPress with React.” This talk provided a deep dive into integrating WordPress with React, particularly focusing on developing Gutenberg blocks.

As we wrap up WordCamp Sylhet 2024, our excitement is already building for next year’s gathering. We cherish the opportunity to support and engage with the incredible community that brought this event to life.
