Bluehost Private Cloud vs. Self-Managed VPS vs. VDS: Which is Right for You?

Bluehost Self-Managed VPS, VDS, and Private Cloud all give you more power and control than shared hosting, but they are built for different stages of growth. This article explains how they differ, so you can choose the right one for your websites, applications, and workloads.

The biggest differences come down to three questions:

  • How isolated are your resources? Shared and virtualized, dedicated and virtualized, or dedicated multi-node cluster.
  • Who manages the environment? You, or Bluehost.
  • How much availability and resilience do your workloads need? A single server, or infrastructure built for high availability.

A brief look at the plans

Self-Managed VPS, VDS, and Private Cloud at a glance
Area Self-Managed VPS VDS Private Cloud
Infrastructure A virtual server on a shared physical host A virtual server with dedicated vCPU and RAM A single-tenant, multi-node cluster built on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI)
Resource isolation Allocated resources on a shared host Dedicated vCPU, RAM, and storage locked at the hypervisor level Dedicated compute, storage, and private networking for your environment only
Management Self-managed: you run the server Self-managed: you run the server Fully managed by Bluehost
Root access Full root access (SSH) and API access Full root access (SSH) Managed for you by Bluehost
Support Account- and infrastructure-level support Account-level support by default Managed operational support with a defined support contact
High availability Single server Single server Can be architected for high availability with load balancing across nodes
Setup Deploy yourself, with one-click Linux distros, control panels, and apps Deploy yourself Designed with a Bluehost solutions engineer, with assisted migration
Best for Developers and small sites or projects that want full control Websites, apps, and agents that need consistent, predictable performance Mission-critical sites, applications, databases, and workloads

Key differences

Infrastructure and resource isolation

Self-Managed VPS gives you your own virtual private server with allocated resources on a shared physical host. It is a big step up from shared hosting, but you still share the underlying hardware with other customers.

VDS (Virtual Dedicated Server) reserves vCPU and RAM for your server alone. Bluehost locks your vCPUs at the hypervisor level, so your compute is never pooled with other customers. Your server is still virtualized.

Private Cloud gives your business its own single-tenant, multi-node cluster built on OCI. Compute, block storage, object storage, and networking are provisioned only for you, and a private virtual network isolates your workloads.

Performance

With Self-Managed VPS, performance is strong for most small sites and projects, but it can vary during traffic spikes because the physical host is shared.

VDS is built for consistent performance under sustained or bursty loads. Because your vCPU and RAM are never shared, other customers cannot slow down your server.

Private Cloud spreads your workloads across multiple nodes. Traffic can be balanced between them, which keeps performance predictable as several connected applications, databases, and sites grow.

Management and support

Self-Managed VPS and VDS are self-managed. You install, configure, patch, secure, and maintain your server software, and Bluehost supports the account and underlying infrastructure.

Note: Adding a cPanel license to a self-managed server covers the cPanel software only. It does not add full server management or technical support for issues outside cPanel.

Private Cloud is fully managed by Bluehost by default. Bluehost handles planning, onboarding, provisioning, monitoring, maintenance, and day-to-day operations. You get a defined support contact, such as a named support contact or technical account manager, depending on your service model.

Security

Self-Managed VPS includes network-level filtering that helps shield your server from volumetric attacks. On both Self-Managed VPS and VDS, you are responsible for server-level security, such as firewall rules, updates, and access control.

Private Cloud includes a zero-trust security model managed by Bluehost:

  • A Web Application Firewall (WAF) that helps block common web attacks.
  • DDoS protection against malicious traffic.
  • Encryption at rest and in transit across supported systems.
  • Secure access controls and audit logging.

Availability, backup, and recovery

Self-Managed VPS and VDS each run as a single server. Because they are self-managed, you control how your data is backed up and restored.

Private Cloud is designed for high availability. It includes managed, automated backups, tested recovery procedures, and uptime monitoring measured against your service-level agreement.

Scaling

Self-Managed VPS supports easy upscaling to larger plans as your needs grow.

VDS lets you upgrade resources without migration, downtime, or interruption to your operations.

Private Cloud scales compute, block storage, object storage, and network resources independently and on demand, without rebuilding or moving your applications.

Which option should you choose?

Choose Self-Managed VPS if you:

  • Want full root control and are comfortable managing your own software, configuration, and security.
  • Run small websites, development projects, or testing environments.
  • Want to deploy popular Linux distributions, control panels, or apps in one click.

Choose VDS if you:

  • Need consistent performance that does not slow down during traffic spikes or heavy workloads.
  • Run production apps, SaaS tools, AI runtimes, or build and deployment pipelines.
  • Want dedicated compute but still prefer to manage the server yourself.

Choose Private Cloud if you:

  • Run several connected, mission-critical applications, databases, sites, or AI agents.
  • Need high availability, private networking, and managed backup and recovery.
  • Have a small IT team and want Bluehost to design, secure, and operate the environment for you.
  • Need security features such as WAF, encryption, and audit logging for your workloads.

Tip: You don't have to choose the most powerful option. If your current VPS or VDS still meets your performance, availability, and support needs, it may be the right fit for now. Private Cloud becomes the better choice when your workloads need a multi-node cluster, high availability, and managed operations.

Frequently asked questions

Q: What is the difference between VPS and VDS?

A: Both are self-managed virtual servers with full root access. A VPS uses allocated resources on a shared host, while a VDS reserves dedicated vCPU and RAM for your server alone, so performance stays consistent under load.

Q: Is Private Cloud the same as VPS or VDS?

A: No. VPS and VDS are single virtual servers that you manage yourself. Private Cloud is a dedicated, multi-node cloud environment on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure that Bluehost fully manages for you.

Q: Do I get root access with Private Cloud?

A: Private Cloud is fully managed by Bluehost, so Bluehost operates the infrastructure for you. If you need specific access to your environment, discuss it with your Bluehost solutions engineer during planning.

Q: Does Bluehost manage my VPS or VDS server?

A: No. Self-Managed VPS and VDS are self-managed. You manage the server software, configuration, and security. If you want Bluehost to manage a server for you, consider Managed VPS, Dedicated Hosting, or Private Cloud.

Q: How do I get started with Private Cloud?

A: Private Cloud is not purchased through a self-serve checkout. Submit your information on the Bluehost Private Cloud team page, our Private Cloud team will contact you to plan an environment around your workloads with a solutions engineer.
