Renewing Your Domain Name

Share

Bluehost offers automatic renewal by default for all domain registrations. This means that fifteen (15) days before the expiration date of your domain, we'll automatically try to renew it on your behalf using the payment method associated with your account. However, if the automatic renewal doesn't work, we'll remind you to renew your domain manually before it expires. This ensures that you keep your domain name and have plenty of time to renew it before it's too late.

So, whether you're a business owner, blogger, or individual looking to keep your website up and running, you can rely on our automatic renewal feature to keep your domain name registered and your online presence accessible to your audience.

Why Renew Your Domain Name?

A domain name can indeed expire if it is not renewed before the end of its registration period, potentially leading to website downtime and loss of the domain. That's why most domain registrations come with automatic renewal features, which ensure your domain stays registered without any effort on your part.

Here are some reasons why you need to renew your domain:

  • Prevent Domain Expiration: Renewing your domain name ensures that your website remains live and accessible to users. Failing to renew can result in your site going down, which can affect both user experience and your brand's reputation.

  • Maintain Brand Identity: Your domain name is a critical part of your brand identity. Losing it due to non-renewal can lead to competitors or cybersquatters taking it over, potentially harming your brand.

  • Avoid Loss of Email Services: If you use email addresses associated with your domain (e.g., [email protected]), failing to renew your domain can disrupt your email communication, leading to loss of business or important communications.

  • Protect SEO Rankings: Your website's search engine rankings could suffer if your domain expires. Rebuilding your site's SEO on a new domain can be time-consuming and challenging.

  • Keep Your Customers: Customers who have bookmarked your site or remember your URL can continue to find you easily if you maintain your domain. Changing your domain name can lead to confusion and loss of customers.

  • Control Over Your Online Presence: Renewing your domain gives you ongoing control over your online presence, allowing you to manage how your brand is perceived and interacted with on the internet.

  • Security Against Cyber Threats: Renewing your domain name helps protect against cyber threats such as domain hijacking, where attackers take control of your domain. Keeping your domain registration up to date is a key security measure.

If the renewal is successful, you'll receive a copy of the receipt directly in your email. This way, you can rest assured that your domain name is registered and ready to use for another year.

Expiration

We'll email you reminders at least sixty (60) days before the domain expiration date at the email address you provided. At least two reminders will be delivered before the expiration date, and one reminder will be delivered within five (5) days.

Your domain name will expire if we cannot acquire payment on or before the due date for renewal.

Your domain registration will become inactive upon expiration and be replaced with a parking page that notifies visitors that the domain name has expired. Other services you had connected to the domain name may no longer be available. The domain is regarded as abandoned if it is not renewed. We reserve the right to sell, remove, auction off, or otherwise dispose of the name at any time.

Your domain name will go into a holding period and might be acquired by a third party as soon as 31 days following expiration. If a third party purchases the domain name within this time, you cannot renew it.

As early as forty-four (44) days after expiration, if a third party has not purchased your domain, the domain will enter a thirty (30) day Redemption Grace Period.

If you wish to renew your domain name during the holding period or while it is in redemption and a third party has not otherwise purchased it, you may be able to restore it. However, if you renew your domain name during the holding or redemption period, we can charge you a reactivation cost of $70.00 (in addition to the yearly renewal fee).

Once the redemption period ends, most registries hold a domain name for five (5) days before deleting it and releasing it for general registration. A domain name is not recoverable during this five (5) day pending deletion process.

Summary

It's important to keep your domain name registered for easy accessibility and recognition to your target audience.

Bluehost offers automatic renewal features for all domain registrations, which can be renewed manually in case of automatic renewal failure. Manual renewal involves:

  1. Logging in to your account.
  2. Finding the renewal center tab.
  3. Choosing the domain to renew.
  4. Processing the payment.

A receipt will be sent to your email if the renewal is successful. Learning how to renew a domain name is important because it ensures you retain ownership and control of your website's domain name. If you fail to renew your domain name, it can be released to the public and potentially purchased by someone else. This could lead to a loss of branding, traffic, and even revenue for your website. You must renew your domain name to maintain your website's online presence, positively impacting your reputation and online visibility. Therefore, renewing your domain name before it expires is crucial to avoid any potential issues.
