How to Purchase and Point a Domain with the Bluehost AI Assistant

Bluehost's MCP (Model Context Protocol) integration lets you search for and register a domain name from inside the AI tool you're already working in (Claude, Claude Code, ChatGPT, Lovable, Builder.io, VS Code, and similar environments) without opening a browser.

You don't need to host anything with Bluehost to use this. Buying a domain and buying hosting are two separate actions. You can register a domain to hold for an idea you haven't built yet, to secure a brand name, or simply because a domain is the first thing you want to buy — no VPS or hosting purchase is required.

If you've just set up a Bluehost VPS through the same AI assistant, you can also use this flow to give that site a name and, once registration is complete, choose to point the domain at it.

This article covers registering a brand-new domain. Connecting a domain you already own with another provider is a separate process and isn't covered here.

Prerequisite

Three things need to be in place before you can buy a domain through the AI assistant:

• Set up the Bluehost MCP server in your AI assistant.
• You're signed into a Bluehost account, new or existing. If you don't have one yet, the AI assistant will help you create one first.
• You have a payment method on file. This is added at the same time as account creation if you don't already have one saved.

All are required no matter why you're buying a domain — whether you already have a Bluehost VPS, or you're buying a domain on your own.

Step 1: Tell the AI assistant what you want your domain to be called

Start by telling the AI assistant the name you want. For example, "I want to register jordanscoffeeco.com" or "find me something for a coffee shop called Jordan's."

The AI assistant will always ask you for this directly. It doesn't guess a name from your project files, a repository name, or anything else in your workspace. You decide what the domain is called.

Step 2: Choose from suggestions, or check a specific domain

Based on what you tell it, the AI assistant searches for available domains and lists candidates for each one, showing the domain name, whether it's available, and the price per year.

From here you can:

• Pick one of the suggested domains
• Ask for more suggestions
• Name an exact domain of your own for the AI assistant to check

If you name an exact domain, the AI assistant checks that domain name. If the domain is taken, the AI assistant offers close alternatives. If it falls outside what this flow supports (see Supported domain extensions below), the AI assistant explains why and offers an alternative you can register instead.

Step 3: Decide whether to add WHOIS privacy

The AI assistant will ask whether you want to add WHOIS privacy. This is a paid add-on, the same as it is when you register a domain directly on bluehost.com.

WHOIS privacy keeps your personal contact details out of the domain's public ownership record. If the extension you're registering doesn't support privacy, the AI assistant will tell you plainly that your contact details will appear in the public record.

Your answer here determines what shows up in the order summary in the next step.

Step 4: Review and confirm the order

Before anything is charged, the AI assistant states the full order and asks you to confirm. This always includes:

• The domain you're registering
• The total price you're paying today, including tax
• What's included and fixed for this purchase - a 1-year registration term, WHOIS privacy (shown only if you chose to add it), and auto-renew (always on)
• The renewal price and renewal date - for example, "renews at $22.99/yr on 11 Aug 2027 unless you turn auto-renew off in your account" (illustrative example only — your actual renewal price depends on the domain and extension you register)
• The payment method on file - shown as the last 4 digits of your card
• A direct question asking you to confirm the purchase

A few things to know before you confirm:

• Your registrant contact comes from your billing address. The AI assistant uses the address on your Bluehost account as the domain's registrant contact. It isn't shown again or editable during this purchase. If you need to update it, you can do so from your Bluehost account; the change will apply to future registrations.
• Auto-renew is always on and can't be turned off during purchase. You can turn it off afterward from your Bluehost account.
• The card on file is charged. You can't choose a different payment method or add a new one during this purchase. Payment methods are managed from your Bluehost account.
• The registration term is fixed at 1 year. There's no multi-year option.

Step 5: Registration completes

Once you confirm, you'll see an in-chat progress state while it works.

If registration takes longer than usual, the AI assistant stops waiting after 2 minutes and lets you get back to other work. The registration itself keeps running and finishes on Bluehost's side. You'll receive an email saying that your domain registration is completed.

At this point, the domain is registered and owned by you. If you only wanted a domain, this is the end of the process.

After registration: verify your domain by email

If your registrant email is already verified on your Bluehost account, this step may not apply to you - the AI assistant will let you know either way.

Optional: point your domain to a Bluehost VPS

Domain registration and pointing a domain at a server are two separate actions. Registering a domain never automatically points it anywhere.

This step only comes up if you have at least one Self-Managed VPS on your Bluehost account:

• If you registered the domain right after buying a Self-Managed VPS, the AI assistant asks whether you want to point the domain at it, naming the specific IP address it intends to use. It only writes the DNS records once you explicitly confirm.
• If you have more than one VPS, the AI assistant asks which one to use. It won't guess or default to the most recently created server.
• If you don't have a VPS on your account, this step doesn't come up at all. Registration alone is treated as a complete, successful purchase. The AI assistant won't suggest you also need hosting.

If you do confirm, the AI assistant writes an A record for the domain and a CNAME record for www, and the domain stays on Bluehost's nameservers (ns1.bluehost.com / ns2.bluehost.com). Once the records are written, DNS propagation can take a little time to complete. The AI assistant will tell you the records are set and propagation is in progress, rather than stating the site is live.

Supported domain extensions

This flow only searches, suggests, and registers domains in the following extensions.

If you ask for an extension outside this list (for example, .io, .shop, or .app), the AI assistant will tell you it isn't supported through this flow and offer you the same name on one of the extensions above instead.

What this flow doesn't support

A few things are out of scope for registering a domain through the MCP assistant today:

• Extensions outside .com, .org, .info, .net, and .biz — including popular developer extensions like .io, .dev, and .app
• Premium domains, at any price — these aren't sold through this flow, regardless of cost
• Aftermarket or broker-listed domains
• Internationalized domain names (non-ASCII / Unicode characters)
• Multi-year registration terms — the term is fixed at 1 year
• Editing the registrant contact during purchase — it's taken from your billing address; you can update it from your Bluehost account for future registrations
• Turning auto-renew off during purchase — you can do this from your Bluehost account after buying
• Turning WHOIS privacy off after adding it, during the same purchase
• Choosing a different payment method, or adding a new one, during purchase — the card on file is always charged
• Connecting a domain you already own elsewhere, or transferring one in from another registrar — these are separate processes
• This flow is only available for US-based accounts

If you ask the AI assistant for any of these, it will tell you plainly that it isn't available through this flow and, where one exists, offer the nearest supported option instead.
