Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is Bluehost's MCP server?

A: Bluehost runs its own MCP (Model Context Protocol) server, reachable at https://mcp.bluehost.com/mcp. MCP is an open standard that lets AI assistants such as Claude and ChatGPT connect to outside tools and services. Connecting Bluehost's MCP server to your AI assistant lets it look up your account and hosting details and take certain actions on your behalf, right from the conversation—as an alternative to doing those things through the usual checkout flow on the website.

Q: What can I do once I connect Bluehost's MCP server to my AI assistant?

A: Once connected, your assistant can look up your Bluehost account and hosting details, purchase a Self-Managed VPS, and purchase or point a domain—directly from the conversation. See the next two questions for the full list of what's available today and what isn't yet.

Q: What can you do with Bluehost's MCP server today?

A:

  • Browse available Self-Managed VPS plans, regions, and operating system options.
  • Purchase a Self-Managed VPS directly through your AI tool.
  • Receive SSH key setup and instructions upon provisioning.
  • Purchase a domain directly through your AI tool.
  • View the status of your order in real time.
  • Access account and hosting information for all products on your account—including shared hosting.
  • Retrieve billing account details to support the purchase process.

Q: What hosting and account information can my AI assistant see through the MCP?

A: The following fields are visible through the MCP:

  • Billing account ID
  • Feature set
  • Product instance ID
  • Current number of sites
  • Max number of sites
  • Region description
  • Region type
  • Server status
  • Hosting add-on status
  • Server type
  • Server IP
  • Account status

Note: Expiration dates are not currently visible through the MCP.

Q: What's not supported through the MCP yet?

A:

  • Add or change a payment method through the MCP—this must be done through the browser.
  • Cancel or decommission a server through the MCP—customers must contact support or manage this through their account.
  • Purchase Managed VPS plans—only Self-Managed VPS is available through this path.
  • Access the MCP outside of the US—limited to US customers paying in USD only.

Q: Do I need a Bluehost account to connect the server?

A: Yes. Connecting the server means signing in to (or creating) your Bluehost account and authorizing the connector, the same way you'd authorize any other AI assistant connector.

Q: Will connecting the MCP server charge me anything?

A: No—connecting the server by itself doesn't charge you anything. If you purchase a Self-Managed VPS or a domain through it, you'll need a payment method on file first; payment methods can only be added or changed in the browser, not through the MCP connector itself. See bluehost.com/pricing for current pricing and plans.

Q: What should I know before connecting an AI assistant to my Bluehost account?

A:

  • Only connect your account to AI assistants you trust. Once connected, it can view your account details and, once authorized, take actions—including purchases—on your behalf.
  • You can review or disconnect it anytime from your AI assistant's connector or extension settings.
  • Keep your AI assistant app up to date so you have the latest security fixes.

Summary

Bluehost's MCP server lets your AI assistant connect to your account, right from the conversation. Today that means looking up account, billing, and hosting details, purchasing a Self-Managed VPS or a domain, and getting SSH key setup as soon as a server is provisioned. Payment-method changes, cancellations, Managed VPS purchases, and access outside the US aren't supported through the MCP yet. Connect only assistants you trust, and see the related article above for step-by-step setup instructions.
