Bluehost Private Cloud: OCI-Based vs. VMware-Based Private Cloud

If you have looked at private clouds before, you have likely seen offerings built on VMware. Bluehost Private Cloud is built on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) instead. This article explains what that means in practice, where the two approaches differ, and what stays the same for your workloads.

In short, both approaches give you single-tenant, multi-node infrastructure for running your applications. The difference is the platform underneath, which affects how resources are allocated, how storage and networking are delivered, how failures are handled, and where your environment can run.

What sits underneath each approach

VMware-based private cloud

A VMware-based private cloud runs the VMware virtualization stack on a set of physical servers. A hypervisor runs on each host, and a central management layer pools those hosts into a cluster. Virtual machines (VMs) are created from the cluster’s combined capacity, and storage and networking are usually virtualized by additional VMware components.

With this model, your capacity is tied to the physical hosts in your cluster. To grow beyond it, more hosts are added to the cluster.

OCI-based private cloud (Bluehost Private Cloud)

Bluehost Private Cloud runs on OCI, Oracle’s enterprise cloud platform. Instead of building a virtualization layer on top of rented hardware, your environment uses OCI’s cloud-native compute, storage, and networking services. Bluehost then designs, configures, and operates that environment for you.

Your compute, block storage, object storage, and networking are provisioned specifically for your environment, and each can be scaled independently.

Key similarities

Moving from a VMware-based design to an OCI-based one does not change the fundamentals of private cloud. Both approaches:

  • Give you single-tenant infrastructure that is not shared with other customers.
  • Use multiple nodes, so a single hardware failure does not have to take you offline.
  • Run your workloads on virtual machines with standard operating systems, so your applications run the same way.
  • Provide private networking that isolates your workloads and controls what can reach what.
  • Support high availability, backups, and recovery planning for mission-critical workloads.
  • Support encryption and access controls to protect your data.

Key differences

VMware-based private cloud compared with Bluehost Private Cloud (OCI-based)
Area VMware-based private cloud Bluehost Private Cloud (OCI-based)
Platform The VMware virtualization stack installed on a set of physical hosts. Oracle Cloud Infrastructure’s cloud-native compute, storage, and networking, managed by Bluehost.
Resource allocation Capacity comes from a fixed pool of physical hosts. VMs share that pool, and growth usually means adding hosts. Compute uses flexible configurations of CPU and memory. Compute, block storage, object storage, and bandwidth scale independently.
Storage Usually virtualized storage pooled across hosts or attached from a storage array. OCI block storage attached to your nodes, plus OCI object storage for files, media, and backups.
Networking Virtual networks built with VMware networking components or VLANs. A private virtual network built on OCI, with subnets and security rules that isolate your workloads.
Handling failures The cluster restarts VMs on a healthy host if a host fails. VMs can be moved between hosts for maintenance. Workloads run across multiple nodes and can be load balanced. OCI can live-migrate VMs to healthy hosts during infrastructure maintenance.
Regions Limited to the data centers where the provider has deployed VMware hardware. Built on OCI’s global footprint, which Oracle reports as more than 50 public cloud regions in 28 countries.
Management Often includes direct access to the VMware management console, which your team operates. Fully managed by Bluehost by default, with a defined support contact instead of a console your team runs.

What this means in practice

Resource allocation

On VMware-based private cloud, you buy a cluster of hosts and divide its capacity among your VMs. If one resource runs first, such as memory, you often must add a whole host to get more.

On Bluehost Private Cloud, compute, block storage, object storage, and network resources are sized and scaled separately. You can add storage without adding compute or increase compute without rebuilding your applications.

Available services

A VMware-based environment centers on VMs and the VMware tools around them. Bluehost Private Cloud uses OCI’s own building blocks, such as block volumes, object storage, virtual networking, and load balancing. Your Bluehost solutions engineer confirms which services are part of your environment during scoping.

Availability and maintenance

Both approaches are designed to keep workloads running when hardware fails. On Bluehost Private Cloud, availability comes from running across multiple nodes, distributing traffic between them, and managing backup and recovery.

Day-to-day operations

With many VMware-based offerings, your team logs in to the management console and operates the environment. Bluehost Private Cloud is fully managed by default. Bluehost handles provisioning, monitoring, maintenance, and operations, and you work with a defined support contact.

What does not change

  • Your applications. Software that runs on standard Linux or Windows VMs today can run on Private Cloud.
  • Your isolation. Your infrastructure is still dedicated to your business.
  • Your responsibilities for your own application are important. Your application code, data, and application-level security remain on yours, as they would on any private cloud.
  • Your security expectations. Encryption, access controls, and audit logging are still available.

Frequently asked questions

Q: Is Bluehost Private Cloud built on VMware?

A: No. Bluehost Private Cloud is built on Oracle Cloud Infrastructure (OCI) and managed by Bluehost.

Q: Is an OCI-based private cloud still truly private?

A: Yes. Your compute, storage, and networking are provisioned for your environment only, and your workloads are isolated on a private virtual network.

Q: Can my VMware virtual machines move to Private Cloud?

A: In most cases, yes. Workloads running standard operating systems can be migrated. Your solutions engineer reviews each workload during discovery and confirms the best approach.

Q: Will my team still have a VMware-style management console?

A: No. Private Cloud is fully managed by Bluehost, so your team works with a defined support contact instead of operating the platform directly.
