Professional Email: How Many Emails Can I Send and Receive?
To protect accounts and keep email traffic under control, Bluehost Professional Email caps how many messages you can send and receive each hour and each day. The caps you get depend on your plan: Professional Email, Professional Email Plus, or Professional Email Ultra. This article covers each limit and explains what happens if you hit one.
- "Same domain" refers to email sent to another mailbox on your own domain, while "Different domain" refers to email sent to an address outside your domain.
- Each email sent to a single recipient counts as one email.
Outgoing Email Limits
Outgoing limits apply to each mailbox and vary depending on whether the message goes to another mailbox on your own domain or to a different domain.
| Plan | Same-domain emails per hour | Same-domain emails per day | External emails per hour | External emails per day |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Professional Email | 1,000 | 2,000 | 200 | 500 |
| Professional Email Plus | 1,000 | 2,000 | 300 | 1,000 |
| Professional Email Ultra | 1,000 | 2,000 | 500 | 2,000 |
Your domain's overall external limit is the sum of the limits for every active mailbox on it. Mailboxes that are suspended, inactive, or deleted aren't included in that total.
Once you reach an outgoing limit, further emails won't send and may come back to you as undelivered. Moving to a higher plan increases your external sending allowance.
- Domains newly added to Bluehost Professional Email start out with reduced sending limits so they can establish a trusted sending reputation.
- As your domain develops a good sending history, the limits rise step by step until you reach the full sending limits included in your plan.
- This gives email providers time to learn your domain's reputation and lowers the chance of your messages being flagged as spam.
If your domain is new to Bluehost Professional Email, upgrading your plan may not unlock the full limits right away. They become available once your domain has enough sending history.
Incoming Email Limits
A mailbox can receive up to 1,000 emails per hour from senders on your own domain and up to 500 emails per hour from outside domains. Incoming limits are the same on every plan.
Incoming Limits for Non-Existent Mailboxes
Email addressed to mailboxes that don't exist is subject to a soft limit of 500 emails per hour and 1,000 emails per day for your domain. Once that limit is reached, your domain stops accepting messages for non-existent addresses. Email for your real mailboxes still arrives, unless those mailboxes reach their own limits.
Summary
Bluehost Professional Email applies hourly and daily limits to both outgoing and incoming email. All plans allow 1,000 same-domain emails per hour and 2,000 per day, and external sending runs from 200 per hour on Professional Email to 500 per hour on Professional Email Ultra. Each mailbox can receive up to 1,000 emails per hour from your own domain and 500 per hour from outside domains. If you regularly send large volumes of email, consider upgrading your plan or using a dedicated bulk email service.
