Bluehost AI Builder: How to Use Prompts to Build a Website, an App, or Both

A prompt is a description, in your own words, of what you want to build. Bluehost AI Builder reads that description and creates a working website, app, or both from it.

What you get back depends mostly on what you put in. This article shows you how to write a first prompt that gets you close on the first try, whether you need an informational website, an app that does a job, or both, so you spend fewer credits fixing it afterward.

For more prompt examples and tips on change requests, see Bluehost AI Builder: How to Write Effective Prompts.

How AI Builder Reads Your Prompt

Before it starts building, AI Builder works out two things from your description: what your business is, and what you need the result to do. If either is unclear, it asks up to three short questions, each with a few options and one marked as recommended.

Answering these questions doesn’t use credits, and answering them usually gets you a closer first result than skipping them. If you skip them, AI Builder uses the recommended answers and starts right away.

A Good First Prompt Saves Credits

Each message that creates or changes your site or app uses 1 credit, no matter how small the change. Ten rounds of “actually, make it…” use ten credits. A few extra minutes on your first prompt usually costs less than fixing the result afterward.

Your first build uses 1 credit whether your prompt is one line or ten, so put everything you already know into it.

The Four Things Every Good Prompt Includes

You don’t need to write much. You need to answer four questions.

The four things every good prompt includes, with examples
Include Why it matters Example
What the business is Sets the tone, layout, and wording A mobile dog groomer
Where it operates Makes the result specific instead of generic in Tampa
What it should do The most important part (see below) that takes booking requests
Who uses it Tells AI Builder who it’s writing for from pet owners booking a first visit

Put together, that’s one sentence:

Prompt

A mobile dog groomer in Tampa that takes booking requests from pet owners booking a first visit.

That’s already enough to build from. The rest of this article is about making it better.

Describe What It Should Do, Not How to Build It

This is the biggest difference between a prompt that works and one that doesn’t. AI Builder already knows how to build things. What it can’t guess is how your business runs. Describe the job to be done, and leave the technical decisions to AI Builder.

Less useful:

Prompt

Build me a responsive site with a hero section, a three-column feature grid, and a contact form in the footer.

More useful:

Prompt

A house-cleaning service in Boise. Customers should be able to see what we clean, see our prices, and ask for a quote for their home.

The first describes a layout. The second describes a business, which lets AI Builder choose a layout that fits it.

The same applies to data. You don’t need to know what a database is. Describe the information you need from people and what you’ll do with it.

Less useful:

Prompt

Add a database and a form with validation.

More useful:

Prompt

People should be able to tell us how many bedrooms they have and when they want us to come.

Start from a Suggestion

Under the prompt box, you’ll see suggestions such as Business site, Booking site, and Customer portal. Clicking one fills the box with a detailed example prompt.

These are worth using even if none matches your business. Click the closest one, then edit it: change the business type, the town, and what it should do. You get the structure of a well-written prompt without starting from scratch.

Prompts for a Website

If you mostly need pages that tell people who you are, what you offer, and how to reach you, lead with the information and name the pages you expect.

Prompt

A family-run Italian restaurant in Portland, Maine. I need a homepage with photos, a menu page, an about page telling our story since 1987, opening hours, and a page with directions and parking.

Why this works:

  • It names the pages, so nothing important is missed.
  • It includes a detail with character, “since 1987,” which shapes the tone of the writing.
  • It says what matters to this business: photos, hours, and parking.

If you have a strong preference about the order of pages or what goes on the homepage, say so. If not, leave it out and see what you get.

Prompts for an App

If you need the result to do something, such as take requests, collect information, or let people choose options, lead with the action and describe it as a sequence.

Prompt

A mobile dog groomer in Tampa. A customer should be able to choose a service, tell me their dog's breed and size, pick a few dates that suit them, and send me the request. I need to be able to see the requests that come in.

Why this works:

  • It walks through what the customer does, in order.
  • It names the specific information needed, such as breed, size, and dates, instead of “their details.”
  • It says what the owner needs, not just what the customer does.

That last point is the one most often left out. Always say what you need to happen on your end.

Tip: If your app holds business data, such as requests, bookings, or customer details, ask AI Builder to require sign-in so only you and your team can see it.

Prompts for Both a Website and an App

Most businesses need both: pages that explain who you are, and one thing that does a job. Describe them together, with the pages first and the action second.

Prompt

A yoga studio in Austin. I need a homepage, a page introducing our four teachers, a class timetable, and prices. People should also be able to send us an inquiry about trying a first class: their name, email, and which class they're interested in.

Notice the structure: here’s my business, here are the pages I need, and here’s the one thing people should be able to do. That shape works for almost any business.

If You’re Not Sure Which You Need

Describe your business and what you want to happen, and let AI Builder decide. You don’t have to classify it yourself. If the result does more or less than you need, say so in your next message.

Note: AI Builder doesn’t take online payments or sell products. To sell online, use AI Store.

Warning: Don’t use your site or app to collect sensitive information, such as payment card numbers, health records, tax information, or government ID numbers.

Describe How It Should Look

You can describe a look and feel in the same prompt, in plain words. You don’t need color codes or design terms.

Prompt

Warm and traditional, cream and dark green, with large photos of the food.

Prompt

Clean and modern, lots of white space, calm colors.

If you have brand colors, name them, or give the hex codes if you have them. If you have a logo, attach it, and AI Builder can use its colors. If you have no preference, say nothing. AI Builder chooses a look that fits the business, and you can change it later.

Use Your Own Content

To attach files, click Add (+) next to the message box. You can add your logo or photos, or choose Show us a site you like to share a website as a design reference. File types, size limits, and upload restrictions may change. For current limits, visit the Bluehost AI Builder page.

What AI Builder does with each kind of attachment
Attach What AI Builder does with it
Your logo Uses it in the result and takes color cues from it
Photos of your work, premises, or team Places them throughout the pages
A PDF menu, price list, or brochure Uses the content instead of placeholder text
A spreadsheet of services, classes, or stock Uses it as content for lists and pages
A site you like, or a screenshot of one Uses it as a style reference, if you say that’s what it’s for

Say what you want done with each attachment, because the same file can be used in different ways:

Prompt

Use this PDF as our menu content, and use the logo in the header.

Attachments don’t use extra credits. They’re included in the credit for the message you send them with.

One Big Prompt or Several Small Ones?

Put everything you already know into your first prompt. After the first build, switch to small, specific changes. Asking for five unrelated things in one message makes it harder to tell what went wrong if something does.

Harder to work with:

Prompt

Change the colors, add a team page, make the booking form shorter, move the phone number to the top, and rewrite the about text.

Easier to work with:

Prompt

Move the phone number to the top of every page.

Each message uses 1 credit either way, but a single clear change is easier to check and easier to change back if you don’t like it.

When you ask for a change, say where it should happen and what should stay the same. For example: “Add a gallery page. Leave the homepage exactly as it is.” For more examples, see Bluehost AI Builder: How to Write Effective Prompts.

If the Result Isn’t What You Expected

This is normal on a first build and is usually fixed in one message. Describe the gap instead of starting over.

  1. Say what’s wrong, specifically. “The tone is too corporate for a family business” works better than “I don’t like it.”
  2. Say what you wanted instead. Give AI Builder something to aim for, not just something to avoid.
  3. Change one thing at a time. If several things are off, fix the biggest one first, then look again.

Starting a new project because the first one missed usually costs more than correcting it, because the new first build uses a credit too. For more help, see How to Troubleshoot Your Website or App Build Using Prompts.

Summary

A good first prompt names your business, where it operates, what it should do, and who uses it. Describe the job to be done instead of a layout, list the pages for a website, walk through the steps for an app, and put the pages first and the action second when you need both. Put everything you know into the first prompt, then make one change at a time, so you spend fewer credits getting the result you want.
