Bluehost AI Builder: How to Write Effective Prompts

With Bluehost AI Builder, you can create a website or an app by describing what you want in the AI chat. After it’s built, you can keep refining it with follow-up prompts in the AI chat. The clearer your prompt, the closer the result will match what you have in mind.

Note: Bluehost AI Builder doesn’t currently support online selling or payments. To build an online store, see Bluehost AI Store: How to Build an AI Storefront Website Using Effective Prompts.

Think of AI Builder as a capable assistant that follows instructions closely, not as a template picker. Each prompt is a request against your project as it exists now. The more clearly you describe what you want, and what should stay the same, the more likely the result matches your goals.

This guide covers how to write your first prompt, how to request changes after your project is built, and how to check the results.

Core Principles for Writing Effective Prompts

Be clear and specific. Vague prompts lead to generic or unfocused results. Precise directions produce better-structured designs and content.

Provide business and audience context. Mention your industry, who your visitors are, and the main purpose of the site or app, such as generating leads, taking bookings, or sharing content.

Prompt iteratively. You don’t need to get everything right the first time. Start with a solid first version, then refine specific parts with follow-up prompts.

Work one component at a time. After the first version is built, focus each prompt on one area, such as the hero section, navigation, booking form, or footer. This gives you more control and makes results easier to review.

Define your brand early. Share your preferred colors, fonts, tone of voice, and design inspiration so the result looks consistent and on-brand rather than generic.

Attach your own files. Add your logo, photos, or documents such as a menu or price list with your prompt (+), and say how to use them, for example, “Use the attached logo in the header and the attached menu on the Menu page.” You can also paste the web address of a site you like as a design reference.

Writing Your First Prompt

A strong first prompt covers four elements:

Elements of a strong first prompt, with website and app examples
Element What to include Website example App example
Identity What the site or app is for A booking site for a family-owned barbershop A class-booking app for a small yoga studio
Audience Who will use it Local customers ages 20–50 who book on their phones Studio members who reserve classes weekly, and staff who manage the schedule
Design/vibe Visual style, colors, tone Clean and modern, charcoal and gold, friendly tone Calm and minimal, sage green and white, encouraging tone
Core features Pages, screens, and functionality Home, Services, Book Now, and Contact pages; an appointment form Member sign-in, weekly class calendar, reserve and cancel buttons, a staff view of class rosters

Example first prompt for a website

Prompt

Build a website for a family-owned barbershop in a busy downtown area. Our customers are local professionals who book on their phones. Use a clean, modern design with charcoal and gold accents and a friendly tone. Include Home, Services, Book Now, and Contact pages, plus an appointment booking form with date and time selection.

Example first prompt for an app

Prompt

Build a class-booking app for a small yoga studio. Members should be able to sign in, view the weekly class schedule, and reserve or cancel a spot. Each class should show the instructor, time, and number of spots left. Staff need a separate view that shows who is booked in each class. Use a calm, minimal design with sage green and white, and an encouraging tone. Make it easy to use on a phone.

After you send your first prompt, AI Builder may ask a few questions before it builds. Answering them is free and helps it get closer on the first build.

Prompt Categories and Examples

Use these categories to shape each part of your project.

Prompt categories, what each controls, and example website and app prompts
Category What it controls Website prompts App prompts
Overall vision and type The foundation and purpose of your project “Build a responsive website for a financial analytics SaaS company.” “Create a portfolio website for a freelance wedding photographer.” “Build an app where my book club members can suggest books and vote on the next read.” “Create an app my cleaning crew can use to see each day’s jobs and mark them complete.”
Design Overall look and feel “Use a warm, inviting design with earthy tones such as terracotta, olive green, and beige, large photography, and modern typography.” “Apply a dark-mode design with dark gray backgrounds, white text, and electric blue accents.” “Use a simple dashboard layout with a left sidebar menu, white cards, and navy accents.” “Keep buttons large and easy to tap on a phone.”
Structure and navigation Pages or screens, and how people move between them “Create pages for Home, About, Services, Blog, and Contact.” “Use a sticky top navigation with a visible Get Started button.” “Include a footer with contact details, social links, and a newsletter signup.” “Create screens for Dashboard, Tasks, Team, and Settings.” “Show a bottom navigation bar on mobile.” “Open the Dashboard after users sign in.”
Functionality Interactive features “Add an appointment booking form with date and time selection.” “Create a filterable gallery with individual project pages.” “Add lead capture forms and testimonials.” “Let users sign in and see only their own requests.” “Add a form to log expenses and show a running total by category.” “Let staff mark each request as New, In Progress, or Done.”
Content and SEO Text and search-friendly content “Generate five homepage headlines with a friendly, professional tone.” “Write SEO-friendly descriptions for each service.” “Create an FAQ section written in natural, conversational language.” “Write short, friendly help text for each form field.” “Add a message on the empty Tasks screen that explains how to add a first task.”

Note: SEO-friendly text can help your project appear in search results once you connect your own domain. The free .app.bluehost.ai address isn’t indexed by search engines, and search rankings aren’t guaranteed.

Tip: Your first prompt doesn’t need every detail. Start with the essentials, then add features one at a time.

Example app prompt

Prompt

Build an event booking app for a community running club. Show upcoming runs with the date, meeting spot, and distance. Let members register with their name and email, and stop sign-ups when a run reaches 30 people. Give organizers a view of who registered for each run. Use a bright, energetic design with orange and white.

Warning: Don’t use your site or app to collect sensitive information, such as payment card numbers, health records, or government ID numbers. For more guidance, see Bluehost AI Builder: What You Can Build — And What You Shouldn’t.

Requesting Changes After Your Project Is Built

A good change request names three things: what should change, what should stay the same, and the result visitors should see. Before you send it, decide why the change is needed and how you’ll know it worked. Being specific helps prevent unintended changes elsewhere and reduces the follow-up requests, and credits, you need.

The three parts of a good change request, with examples
Part Examples
1. What needs to change Add an About page with a short company history. Replace the hero image with a photo of a bright, modern office. Change the homepage button color to dark green.
2. What should stay the same Keep the current navigation menu. Do not change the branding or colors. Leave all other pages unchanged.
3. The desired result Visitors can find our hours and location from the homepage. The About page appears in the main navigation. Each service is listed with its name and a one-line description.

Instead of:

Prompt

Make the homepage better.

Try:

Prompt

Rewrite the homepage introduction so it explains our three main services in two short sentences. Keep the existing layout, images, and colors unchanged.

Example Change Requests

Adding a page

Prompt

Add a Services page that lists our four services, each with a short description and a photo. Add it to the main navigation after Home. Keep all existing pages and the current design unchanged.

Improving a workflow

Prompt

Update the booking page so customers choose a service before they choose a time. Keep the current page design and navigation unchanged.

Updating content

Prompt

Replace all references to "Free Consultation" with "30-Minute Consultation." Keep all other content and page layouts unchanged.

Changing a visual

Prompt

Replace the homepage banner image with the photo I've attached. Keep the banner text and layout unchanged.

Attach the photo with your prompt. If you don’t attach one, AI Builder picks a stock photo.

Make One Change at a Time

Smaller requests are easier to review and make issues easier to pinpoint.

Instead of:

Prompt

Add an About page, change the colors, rewrite the homepage, and add a gallery.

Try:

  1. Add the About page, then review the result.
  2. Change the colors, then review again.
  3. Continue with the next change.

Group only closely related edits in one request, such as several text updates on the same page.

Review and Refine the Results

After each update, review your project before sending the next prompt. Check that:

  • The requested change appears as expected.
  • Other pages and content were not changed unexpectedly.
  • Navigation links still go to the right pages.
  • Forms, buttons, and links work properly.
  • Content is accurate, clear, and on-brand.
  • The design looks right on a phone as well as a computer.

If your project includes interactive features, test the actions visitors use most, such as moving between pages, submitting forms, and clicking buttons.

If the Results Aren’t Quite Right

Send a more detailed follow-up. Name what is wrong, what it should look like instead, and what should stay the same.

Instead of:

Prompt

The services section isn’t right.

Try:

Prompt

Show the services section as three cards in one row. Each card should display the service name, a one-sentence description, and the price. Keep the rest of the homepage unchanged.

Extra context often gets better results on the first try, which saves credits.

Credits and Plan Limits

In Bluehost AI Builder, each message that changes your project uses one credit. Clear, focused prompts get better results sooner and save credits.

Tip: Questions are free. Ask AI Builder to explain something or plan a change before you spend a credit on it. For example:

Prompt

Which pages link to the booking page?

Free questions are limited to prevent abuse.

  • Credit rollover: Unused credits don’t roll over to the next billing or usage period. Top-up credits expire 30 days after purchase.
  • Starting over: To rebuild from scratch, create a new site or app instead of editing your current one. There’s no limit on how many you can create, but each new build uses 1 credit. Start over only when you want a different project, not to fix a single change.
  • Free plan: You get 5 credits per day and 30 credits per 30-day period. You can publish your project for free on a Bluehost AI Builder address (ending in .app.bluehost.ai). To get more credits, buy a credit top-up or upgrade to a paid plan. To connect your own domain, upgrade to a paid plan.

For current credit allowances, pricing, and plan details, visit the Bluehost AI Builder page.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Being too vague: Requests like “Make a website” give too little direction, so results feel generic.
  • Leaving out key details: Without your business type, audience, or needed features, the result may not fit your goals.
  • Overloading the prompt: Too many ideas at once make it harder for the AI to interpret what you want.
  • Not specifying a design style: Without guidance on look and feel, the design may not match your vision.
  • Skipping key features: Forgetting contact forms, booking options, or sign-in pages leaves gaps in functionality.
  • Not saying what to keep: Change requests without limits can alter parts of your project you were happy with.

Best Practices

  • Be specific about what should change.
  • Clearly identify what should stay the same.
  • Focus on one change at a time, and plan ahead since each change request uses a credit.
  • Ask questions first. They’re free, so use them to plan a change before you make it.
  • Review and test your project before sending the next prompt.
  • Use follow-up prompts to refine results.

Summary

Clear, structured prompts with business context give you more control over design, layout, content, and functionality. Start with a strong first prompt, then refine one change at a time, saying what should change, what should stay the same, and the result you expect. Review each update before moving on.
