Migrate Website Content Yourself
This guide outlines how to manually migrate your website content, files, and databases to Bluehost. While Bluehost offers free and paid migration services, this approach allows you to take control and migrate your website immediately.
Before You Begin:
- Understand Your Needs: Consider the complexity of your website and your comfort level with technical procedures. This method works best for users familiar with cPanel or FTP access.
- Gather Credentials: You'll need login information for both your current hosting provider's control panel (cPanel) and your Bluehost account.
- Backup, Always Backup: Create a recent backup of your website's files and database in case of unforeseen issues.
To manually migrate your website contents:
- Create a local copy of your website's files on your computer from your current hosting provider.
- Transfer the files to the Bluehost server using our File Manager or an FTP client (FileZilla).
If your website is built with WordPress or another CMS (Content Management System) that makes use of a database, you will also need to complete the following steps:
- Back up the database on the old server using phpMyAdmin.
- Create a new database on your MySQL Database.
- Import the database backup to the Bluehost server.
- Update your site's configuration files to reflect your updated database information.
