Gemini import memory lets you bring the context you’ve built in ChatGPT or Claude into Gemini, so you don’t have to start from scratch. Eligible users with a personal Google Account can either paste a memory summary from another AI app or upload exported chat history as a .zip file.

This guide explains who can use Gemini import memory, how memory and chat imports differ, how to move your ChatGPT or Claude context into Gemini and what happens to your data after import.

What does Gemini import memory move?

Gemini import memory moves one of two things, depending on the option you choose. Memory import moves a written summary of your preferences and context, while chat import moves your exported conversations so you can continue them in Gemini.

Each option asks for different prep, takes a different amount of time and leaves a different result. The details below come from Google’s help page.

Start with memory import if you mainly want Gemini to know your business and writing preferences. Add chat import when you need specific old threads, such as a client proposal you drafted months ago.

Who can use Gemini import memory?

You can use Gemini import memory with a personal Google Account if you’re 18 or older. You also need access to the AI app you’re leaving. If the option doesn’t appear, check these conditions from Google’s documentation first.

  • Account type: You need a personal Google Account, not a work, school or supervised one. Google’s Gemini switching announcement also excludes Business and Enterprise accounts.
  • Age: You must be 18 or older.
  • Region: As of October 2026, Google’s help page says the feature isn’t available in the European Economic Area (EEA), Switzerland or the United Kingdom (UK).
  • Surface: The feature isn’t available in Gemini in Google Messages, Gemini in Chrome or Gemini on Android XR, so use gemini.google.com.
  • Memory setting: Memory needs Keep Activity on, according to the Gemini memory settings guide. The Memory toggle sits under Settings & help > Personal Intelligence.

Menu labels can vary by account and rollout, so look for similar wording if yours differ.

How to import memory into Gemini?

Memory import asks your current AI app to describe what it knows about you, then hands that description to Gemini. It takes four steps, and the first happens before you open Gemini.

1. Review what your current AI remembers

Check what your current assistant remembers, because its response becomes the summary you import. OpenAI’s ChatGPT memory help article says Memory can use relevant context from past chats and other available sources, and you can review its controls under Settings > Personalization > Memory.

In Claude, open Settings > Capabilities or Settings > Memory, depending on your version. Anthropic’s Claude memory import and export page shows where to view and edit what Claude remembers.

Remove anything you wouldn’t want stored in a Google account, such as client names or financial figures. The Bluehost guide on what ChatGPT keeps private covers what belongs in an AI tool.

2. Copy Gemini’s import prompt

Open gemini.google.com on your computer and sign in to your personal Google Account. At the bottom left, click Settings & help, then select Import memory to Gemini. Copy the prompt Gemini shows you.

3. Run the prompt in ChatGPT or Claude

Paste Gemini’s prompt into a new chat in ChatGPT or Claude and send it. Read the reply before you copy it, and edit out anything outdated or private, such as a former job title.

The reply is a summary, so it may leave out details the app knows. Still deciding whether to switch? Our breakdown of how Gemini and ChatGPT compare can help you choose.

4. Paste the reply and click Add memory

Return to Gemini, paste the reply into the text field and click Add memory. Google’s help page says Gemini then creates a new chat thread and uses it to remember details in future chats.

To check the result, start a new chat and ask Gemini what it knows about your work. If key details are missing, add them in a follow-up chat.

How to import ChatGPT or Claude chat history into Gemini?

Chat import brings over the conversations themselves, so plan for some waiting. OpenAI says ChatGPT exports can take up to 7 days, and both OpenAI and Anthropic say their download links expire after 24 hours. Google’s help page notes the import process depends on the source platform and may take up to a day to complete.

1. Export your ChatGPT data

In ChatGPT, go to Settings > Data controls > Export data. Select Export, then Confirm export and OpenAI sends a download link by email or text message.

OpenAI’s export instructions say the link expires 24 hours after you receive it. Self-serve export isn’t available for ChatGPT Business, Enterprise or ChatGPT for Healthcare workspaces.

2. Export your Claude data

Run your Claude export from Settings > Privacy > Export data in the Claude web app or Claude Desktop. The Claude export help article says exports can’t start from the iOS or Android apps.

Google’s help page mentions choosing a date range, so pick one if Claude offers it. Before you upload, confirm the downloaded file is a .zip. Moving from Claude for specific tasks? Our Claude vs Gemini comparison covers where each tool fits.

3. Upload the .zip to Gemini

Back in Gemini, go to Settings & help > Import memory to Gemini. Under Import chats, click Add and select your .zip file.

Google’s help page sets a 5 GB file limit and allows up to 5 .zip files per day. Imported chats show an imported-chat icon and are searchable.

4. Manage, re-upload or delete imported chats

To remove one imported chat, find it under Chats and select More > Delete. To remove everything from a single upload, delete that import’s entry.

Re-uploading a .zip adds any new conversations and overwrites the ones you imported before. If an import is interrupted, Google notifies you and you can delete the entry and try again.

What moves to Gemini and what stays behind?

Your memory summary and the conversations in your export move to Gemini. Your old account, its settings and your future activity there stay with that service. Use these points to set realistic expectations.

  • Memory import: Only what the other app writes in its reply moves over, so some detail can drop out.
  • Ongoing updates: Google’s help page doesn’t describe any sync. Treat each import as a snapshot and re-run the prompt to refresh it.
  • Chat history: The conversations in your export move over. Google describes memory text and chat history only, so don’t assume other items carry over.
  • Source app settings: Each company’s controls apply to its own account, so review ChatGPT or Claude settings inside those apps.

If you mainly want Gemini to know your business, memory import may be enough. If you need to continue a long-running thread, such as a content calendar chat, add chat import too.

How Google handles imported memory and chats?

Google says imported and continued chats are saved in your Activity and used to improve its services, including training generative AI models. The Gemini Apps Privacy Hub applies the same treatment to imported memory.

These settings shape how long that data stays and how Google uses it. Review them before you import, since Memory depends on the first one.

  • Keep Activity: Memory needs Keep Activity on. With it off, Google keeps chats for 72 hours and doesn’t use future chats for training unless you send feedback.
  • Retention: The default auto-delete period is 18 months. You can change it to 3 months, 36 months or indefinite.
  • Human review: Chats reviewed by human reviewers can be kept for up to three years, even after you delete your activity.

As of October 2026, Google’s pages don’t describe a separate setting that keeps Memory on while excluding training. Treat your summary as information you’re sharing with a new provider, and leave out confidential client, health or financial details.

Tips before and after you import

A little planning keeps your Gemini memory accurate and your export links from expiring unused. These habits apply whether you import memory, chats or both.

  • Start small: Run memory import first and check the results before uploading years of chats.
  • Plan around the export window: Request your ChatGPT export a week ahead and download it within 24 hours.
  • Refresh on a schedule: Re-run the prompt after big changes, such as a new service line or a rebrand.
  • Check Activity settings first: Decide on the Keep Activity trade-off before importing.

Pro tip: Save your edited memory summary in a document you control. You can reuse it with another AI tool later without rebuilding your context.

Keep your AI context in one dashboard

If you regularly switch between AI tools, rebuilding the same context in every platform can slow you down. Bluehost AI All-Access Pack brings ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok into one dashboard, so you can choose the right model for each task and compare responses without managing separate interfaces.

With Import Memory, you can bring an existing memory summary into AI All-Access Pack. Our import chat memory guide walks through the process: go to Settings > Memory > Import Memory > Import, use the provided prompt with your current AI assistant, then paste the response and select Add to Memory.

Chat Memory can then use those preferences and details across future chats. This imports a memory summary, not your complete chat history.

Beyond shared context, AI All-Access Pack gives you:

  • Multiple AI models: Access ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok from one place and switch between them based on the task.
  • Model comparison: Compare responses from different models before deciding which answer works best for you.
  • Research Agent: Browse, analyze information and generate detailed reports with cited sources.
  • Article Writer and Presentation Builder: Create SEO-focused articles or build complete downloadable presentations from the same dashboard.
  • Account Management Dashboard: Manage seats and provide access to team members from one centralized environment.

For teams that need additional privacy controls, AI All-Access Pack Privacy+ adds Privacy Mode sanitization, privately hosted LLM access, end-to-end encryption, user-specific PIN protection and Incognito Mode. On Privacy+, Chat Memory is optional and admins must choose between Chat Memory and Chat Sanitization because the two cannot run at the same time.

Final thoughts

Memory import is the faster of the two options for giving Gemini useful context, and you control the summary it receives. Confirm your account qualifies and settle your Keep Activity choice today, then add chat history only if you need specific old threads.

If you switch between models during the week, Chat Memory helps reduce how often you need to re-explain your business. Bluehost AI All-Access Pack brings Chat Memory and access to ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and Grok into one dashboard.

FAQs

Does importing memory into Gemini cost anything?

Google’s documentation doesn’t list a fee for importing memory or chats. Google announced the switching tools for all consumer accounts on March 26, 2026. Its help page lists eligibility rules without a paid-plan requirement. Your source app can still set limits, so check whether your ChatGPT or Claude plan allows self-serve exports.

Will importing overwrite my existing Gemini memories?

No, memory import adds a new chat thread rather than replacing your existing Gemini chats. With Memory on, Gemini can draw on that thread alongside earlier conversations. The overwrite rule covers chat history imports, where re-uploading a .zip adds new conversations and overwrites previously imported ones. Keep your most complete export handy if you plan to re-upload.

Does my ChatGPT or Claude training setting apply after I import to Gemini?

Each company’s controls apply to its own account, so your ChatGPT or Claude choice governs data held by that service. OpenAI’s ChatGPT data controls page says memory and model training are separate settings. Once your data is in Gemini, Google’s terms and your Gemini Activity settings apply.

Can I move my Gemini memory to ChatGPT or Claude?

You can ask Gemini to summarize what it knows about you and paste that context into another AI app, but the import process depends on the destination. Claude has a built-in memory import flow, while OpenAI’s current Memory documentation does not list a comparable built-in import flow for ChatGPT. If you want a separate archive of your Gemini data, you can export it through Google Takeout; emailed download links stay active for 7 days.

Can I import memory from AI apps other than ChatGPT and Claude?

Yes, for memory import. Google’s steps have you paste its prompt into the AI platform you’re leaving. Any assistant that can answer it can produce a summary, though the result depends on what that assistant remembers. Chat history import is narrower, since Google’s help page gives instructions only for ChatGPT and Claude exports.
